Types Capabilities Cost Pros/Cons (Service vs In-house)
File File recovery can be done with recovery softwares (like Recuva) and sometimes even built in recovery systems on the operating system that you're using. Typically Free Pros: In-expensive, private data won't be in the hands of someone else. Cons: Time consuming depending on data lost, and not all data can be recovered.
Tape Tapes often have very critical business data that usually can not be replicated. Used for archiving. Magnetic tape is high-capacity but has low cost and durability for back up but expensive when it comes to recovery. $1-$25/GB (overall depends on capacity/damange) Pros: Backup/recovery by a company for tape allows it be done faster, safer, and recoverable even with damages to it like water, sliced edges, heat/smoke damage, etc. Cons: Can be expensive depending on capacity/damage.
Cloud-based Data is encrypted off-site in realtime and monitored. They have speedier recovery times and require you to connect your network to the service's network. $1-$25/GB per month (overall depends on capacity/complexity) Pros: Vendors are the only ones usually that can offer you full back up and recovery on the cloud. In house it is possible, but very expensive as you will need a server and have to manage it. Cons: In the rare case, data might be breached from the vendor you are using.
