BA 420 Business Communications Business Writing Assignment 3: Positive Business Message

As the owner of Island Sportswear in Hawaii, Keoni Hale found himself in a battle against the earth itself when red dirt started seeping into his warehouse and ruining his inventory. A friend suggested that he turn his troubles into opportunities, and Hale came up with a new product line--Red Dirt Sportswear--all made with dye created from the troublesome local dirt.

Purchasing managers coming to the islands on vacation discovered Hale’s “natural” sportswear in the local stores and have been begging him to extend distribution to retail outlets on the mainland. Hale has finally decided to do so and has hired you as a sales representative to help him slowly expand distribution on the mainland.

Hale is starting the new distribution with one store: Surf’s Up, far away from ocean surf in Chicago, Illinois. He feels that with less competition than he’d find on either coast, his island- influenced sportswear will be a big hit in Chicago, especially in the dead of winter.

Your task:

Write a letter to Joel Johnson, the owner of Surf’s Up. Mr. Johnson says he fell in love with the Red Dirt Sportswear clothing concept while on a surfing trip to Maui. Let Mr. Johnson know that he will have a temporary, four-month exclusive retail contract to sell Red Dirt Sportswear and that you have enclosed a credit application and other materials.
