Business Skills for Good: Questioning

Program Transcript

- According to the Right Question Institute, questioning is the ability to organize our

thinking around what we don't know. In business and in life, part of being an effective

leader includes being able to evaluate situations, ask the right questions, and then use

the information you're given to either make decisions yourself, or to help others choose

the right approach for the situation at hand.

Effective questioning generally involves two main components-- knowing what to ask

and how to ask it. If you're given some information to review at work, and you either

receive only part of the information, or if the information you were given lacks context,

you will want to ask some questions to gain a full understanding.

In order to evaluate what to ask, you will employ your critical thinking skills to figure out

what it is you already know, what you need to know, and also begin to think through any

areas where you might be unaware you are missing information. This is where knowing

how to ask the right questions will come in handy.

The first step-- approach the situation with curiosity before rushing to judgment about

what you think the answer is. This involves interrogating your own biases and working

to overcome them, in order to dig deeper into the situation or topic at hand. Ask

questions to receive information, not with an agenda to lead a person to the answer

you're looking for.

In your conversation, you will likely pose a mixture of simple, straightforward questions,

requiring a yes, or a no, or a short answer, as well as open ended questions, that elicit a

more in-depth response from the other person. These open ended questions often

create opportunities for follow-up, in which you can ask for additional details or context,

or provide the other person with the chance to share how they feel about the topic at

hand.

Framing your questions so you convey that you're looking to build collaboration and

support around decision making, not simply interrogating, can help significantly in

achieving your larger goal of reaching understanding.

The next step beyond asking the right questions is to actively listen to the responses

you're given. This includes paying attention to what the other person is saying, as well

as how the information is being conveyed. Active listening keeps you engaged and

involves taking in what the other person is communicating, and reflecting it back to

them. In doing so, you are able to let the other person know that their message has

been received and understood.

Effective questioning requires self-awareness an open mind and sometimes even

courage to tackle difficult issues that arise. But if done well, the end result can be

improved comprehension, clarity, and better decision making for your organization. And

in your own life, achieving greater understanding in all your relationships can pave the

way for you to have a wider sphere of influence in the world.
