Up to 80% of cancer patients undergoing treatment suffer from some level of malnutrition. Malnutrition is the most overlooked side-effect of cancer and its treatments. It has been discovered to be the cause of 1 in 5 cancer-related deaths. Some treatments for cancer can cause weight loss up to 15 pounds during treatment. Even just a 5% reduction in body mass can result in a negative outcome.

Cancer, its treatments, and other disease complications can affect patients' appetite and how their bodies absorb and utilize food. A majority of those being treated for cancer will suffer from a malnutrition deficit. Nutritional guidance from medical professionals is limited. NutraFed offers a personalized experience and option for cancer patients, their caregivers and/or family members.

NutraFed is a virtual nutrition and wellness service specifically designed for those undergoing treatment for cancer. Integrated with telehealth, NutraFed offers one-on-one consultations with a nutritionist specializing in oncology to create a custom meal plan and recommended recipes alongside a plan to maintain physical fitness for cancer patients.

NutraFed is a unique service offering. While telehealth has begun to gain traction, applications which cater specifically to the nutritional needs of cancer patients which integrate with telehealth is novel. Piggybacking on the success, growth, and increased adoption of telehealth by the general public, NutraFed will target the nutritional portion of the continuum of care for those diagnosed with cancer, unlike any application currently in the market.

Notes: While the end-user for the product will be Patients, caregivers or family members, I think it important to market directly to doctors and other nutrition professionals, word of mouth for an app such as this could provide another level of “free advertising”. Communication through social media and cancer care websites should be the primary marketing distribution methods.

Notes: As this is going to be a small tech startup I don’t see the need for a Board of directors. The team structure can simply be Owners, Investors, Developers and Designers, and a Product Manager. Other positions such as accounting, nutritionists will be consultants/contractors. However I do think a small Board of Advisors will be essential since there will be some navigating the telehealth/ health industry involved and I think it would provide some investor confidence as to have some experts advising in those areas.
