Title: A Review of Royal Dutch Shell’s Social Performance regarding the Environment
Word Count: 1596
Introduction to Royal Dutch Shell
Royal Dutch Shell is a leading international energy company which produces oil, natural gas and chemicals. Shell was created in the year 1833 when Marcus Samuel started selling seashells as antique ornaments. When he passed away, his sons took over and decided to take an interest into the oil industry. Shells head offices are in The Hague, Netherlands. Shell claims that they are progressing towards cleaner energy with a reduced carbon emission. In 2018, it was recorded that shell operates in over seven different countries, and employes about 92 000 employees. Shell produces about 3.7 million oil barrels per day, with a revenue of $388.4 billion (Shell, 2017).
Royal Dutch Shell social performance with regards to fulfilling society’s expectations
Negative Environmental impacts of shell
Environmental Damage in Nigeria
Royal Dutch Shell claims to be progressing towards cleaner energy, due to the inevitable rise in demand for fossil fuels (Shell, 2017). Shell also claims to have high ethical standards and core values, such as honesty, integrity and respect. Trust, teamwork, professionalism and transparency are claimed to be Shell’s Business Principles (Shell, 2017). However, although Shell tries to give the public the idea that they stick to these previously mentioned core values and Business Principles, certain events have suggest otherwise.
In 2011, the United Nations Environment Programme's Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland discovered pollution in Ogoniland and Bodo, due to a pipeline spill in 2008. Hydrocarbon contamination had been discovered in the water sources, which certain sites containing up tp 1000 times higher than the Nigerian drinking water standards. It was estimated that the time needed in order to clean the water of the pollution would be between 20 and 30 years. The clean up has still not begun, 6 years after the UNEP report. Shell admitted liabilities but only offered a compensation of 4000 pounds to the affected community, but has failed to start the clean up as previously mentioned (“Shell concealing damage to health” 2017.1).
Shell failed to fulfil societies expectations in this case as they did not clean up after their oil spill regardless of the fact that this was affecting many communities and the health of the people, as well as damaging the environment with the toxic oils. In conclusion, this in turn created an impact on the community development in the affected areas.
Environmental damage by Shell in Netherlands
It was revealed through Shell’s film, “Climate of Concern” that Shell had acknowledged the climate change dangers for more than 30 years but failed to communicate this. Due to this climate change, many people will become refugees as a result to the sea level rise and other environmental changes as a result of climate change.
In Groningen, Netherlands, Shell’s and NAM’s drilling plant has been discovered to create earthquakes in the surrounding areas. These earthquakes result in damage to the surrounding communities property and houses. Shell has been ruled liable by a number of courts, however they are trying to escape the consequences by all means. In order to avoid liability for the damages caused to the environment and surrounding communities, shell stoped guaranteeing the debts of the NAM, in June 2017 (“Shell’s long history of contempt” 2018.1).
In this case, Shell had failed to clean up the mess they had caused, and when they were tried in court decided to still attempt an escape from the consequences.
Positive Environmental Impacts of Shell
Cleaner Energy for Shell
Due to the effect of climate change, Shell is working to get their energy from a lower carbon source to give cleaner, less damaging energy. As oil and coal are the major forms of energy today and play a part in our everyday lives, however this is highly damaging to the environment. In Shell’s New Lens Scenarios, solar and wind power are said to be able to provide up to 40% of global power by 2060.
However, fossil fuels will continue to be a major power source for next coming years due to peoples everyday transport and other uses that may include some sort of power. Shell works with certain partners, communities and governments to provide safer and cleaner energy in responsible ways without breaching their core values and Business Principles, in order to benefit the people while decreasing pollution. Natural gas is mentioned to be the future of sustainable energy due to its halved production of carbon dioxide.
Replacing a coal plant with a gas plant would result in a 90% reduction in emitted carbon dioxide gas. Shell owns 9 wind powered set ups in Europe and North America which is being used for research into clean energy. Shell is also developing oils for motor vehicles which produce lower toxic emissions, as well as education on conserving fuel and how to lower emissions to drivers (Shell, 2017).
In 1984, van der Toorn(1984) stated “we will one day run out of oil.” This implies that there is an urgent need for a change in energy source, and Shell has realised this and take action towards this matter. Shell formed a contract with Siemens Solar in April of 2001, in order to conduct business. In 2002, shell acquired a 67% share in this company, and is now one of the worlds biggest solar energy companies (Frynas 2003. 281).
Impacts and implications of Shell’s actions on society and stakeholders
In 2016, Shell employed 25 thousand in Europe, 28 thousand in Asia, 4 thousand I Africa, 29 thousand in North America and 4 thousand in South America. This in total is 92 thousand employees under shells wings.
In the Philippines, on Palawan Island, poverty struck, young adults are employed by Shell where they are educated on doing certain jobs and taught certain skills such as welding and construction. Shell’s ‘Bridging Employment through Skills Training” program has resulted in over 4200 scholars with 80% of them becoming employed in the Philippines and overseas. In the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria, new energy resources have been discovered in the area due to the Bonga deep water project. This in turn has helped create the first oil and gas engineer generation in Nigeria. 95% of this plant’s staff are Nigerian (Shell, 2017).
Transport is an everyday part of life for most of us, and each day more and more people are purchasing some sort of vehicle. In February, 2010, Shell stated that together with Cosan, a Brazilian sugarcane to ethanol producer, $12 billion would be invested into this process in order to remove Brazils biomass (Waltz 2010. 1). Although this process removes biomass, ethanol still causes the production of toxic emissions, so this is not a complete fix.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although Shell seem’s as if they are making effort in order to help the environment, stop climate change and reduce carbon emissions, they have also caused a large amount of environmental damage. In my opinion, I personally think that despite Shell’s efforts to obtain cleaner energy in the form of solar, wind or cleaner fuels such as gas and specialised lubricants and oils as mentioned above, they have caused a decent amount more damage than they have good. This is due to the Environmental damage left by the burst of the pipelines in Ogoniland, Nigeria. In addition to this statement, Shell did not commence a clean up scheme until years after the spill, and tried to deny responsibility until several years later. This goes against Shell’s Core Values and Business Principles, and proves that Shell fails to live up to the ethical, environmental, community and health regulations of which companies are expected to follow. In addition, Shell also failed to take responsibility for the earthquakes caused by their refinery in Netherlands. Although Shell provides jobs for 92 thousand of the worlds population, it has negatively affected many many more people than that.
However, if Shell had taken responsibility for their actions, and acknowledged their faults, as well as providing adequate services in order to reverse the error they had created, my opinion on them may have been different.

CIB Business Essay Fail.docx
Assessment 1: Business Report
Introduction
Kmart is a retail store business that’s been founded in 1899 in the United State and has over 200 stores around Australia and New Zealand. The company sells many different products that involve furniture’s, makeup cosmetics, beddings, toys, clothing, school accessories and many more. At this moment Kmart is well known for one of the best stores with the lowest price. This was produced to give all customers the opportunity to buy any product at its lowest price, instead of spending more money on items that can be brought cheaper and still in good condition. Kmart is a very popular retail that gets a lot of customers coming in every day, all day and gains heaps of loyal customers each day. The reason why it’s a potential store because it provides products that everyone seek. It just makes people’s life more easier because everything is there in one store and you don’t need to keep going to stores after stores.
Kmart mission is to provide the best customer service to all buyers, to gain customer trust and lifetime relationship plus giving them the best products that they can receive in good condition and quality. What the company values the most is how they work together as a diverse group. They want everyone to feel like this is their home, being comfortable around different race, ensuring each employee is feeling safe, developing a good teamwork, show respects and love to one another.
Case against Kmart
Health and Safety
Aspect one
Kmart makes sure that all employees and customers feel health and safety within the environment. They try to avoid any incidents or injuries from occurring, this can be at home or at the store. About 12 years ago 85 customers reported Kmart for selling products that were not in good condition and caused major injuries to them customers. These injuries included lacerations, burns and allergic reaction (Kmart, 2019), this left the customers very concerned and worried about the other product that’s been produced. Some of the customers had a bad health issue that needed treatment immediately after their trouble incident from the product they brought. Last year the same issue occurred but this time it was four people who reported the store about a product been purchased. These product included power-boards, hi-ball, glasses, latte glasses, adaptors and skate helmet (Kmart, 2019).
The store decided to make a change and develop some strategies that can improve with the products being in good condition and not causing any harm to the customers. They’ve development a program were they’ll test all the products that’s been reported before it goes on stock again. For example a skate helmet was brought back to the store damaged but no injury was reported at that time. So all the helmet in the store were tested by three laboratories and investigated before it’s been sold. From that day onwards no products were reported or caused any major injuries.
Aspect two
The stores priorities every worker that they work in safe environment area. Last year Kmart had about 37.6% injuries and this year it reduced by 16%. The employees that were involved hurt themselves but the injury wasn’t critical and this was caused by manual handling. The business conduct a training for every employee to take, this was done to make sure that all workers knew
what to do with a heavy load or how to pick up something from the floor without causing any injury to themselves. During the training they provided important methods and steps for employees to understand why it’s important to follow the rules when lifting or picking items. This process was so good that all employees understood the importance and passed the training test. The reason why the training was done is to increase the number of injuries, to make the environment a safety place and focusing on the techniques when manual handling.
There was also another program that Kmart began, which gave the employees the opportunity to have to do a safety coaching program. This included more details in ways you can protect yourself and keeping yourself safe at all the time. It didn’t just cover manual handling this included using personal protective equipment, how to clean a chemical spill, removing broken equipment and reaching for high items. This program helped most of employees on how to keep themselves safe where ever there go and them having the knowledge to also teach other people about manual handing. These two training and coaching programs provided them with great knowledge and understanding by giving them credit to the future life knowing that they’ve been taught and is a good opportunity because they can pass it on to the next generation.
Case for Kmart
Human right
Aspect one
Kmart is a retail store that values human rights to all employees and customers. Firstly Kmart is a cultural group that involves different believes, opinions, language, tradition or religion. This is why they respect human rights because every single person is entitled to do what makes me them feel happy and comfortable. When we talking about human rights Kmart is referring it to developing a good partnership with all the cultural groups, having a strong relationship, able communication and feeling right with the atmosphere. In the past years Kmart combined with Target by developing a program that involved ways in respecting human rights, how it should be protected, its expectation and how all employees plus customers should feel comfortable when it comes to their human rights.
This program was also developed to set a high standards plus goal, by having improvements and finding strategies to make sure that all employees or customers a entitled to bring their believes or opinions inside the store without feeling that they can’t speak their opinions or believes. They believe that everyone is should be treated equally, with dignity and respectfully. At the moment Kmart is still working with the United Nations Universal Declaration Of Human Rights (Kmart, 2019) and they are conducting long term achievement in peoples quality of life.
Aspect Two
Kmart also developed a program called ‘Better together’ to make a difference within the society. This program was developed to build a strong partnership with the society and making a difference with the way were living. Kmart believes when we work together, help one another and show we have each other’s back we can build a strong relationship with the community. Better Together helps achieve better outcomes and brighten our future for tomorrow (Kmart, 2019), but this can only be done if we work together and provide support. Worker together doesn’t just mean only at work this can also involve the customers, suppliers, factory workers, trade union or the broader community (Kmart, 2019). These a ways that us people can work better together. This kind of program will improve on how we treat people if it’s through respect, love, with dignity, using appropriate language, human rights or freedom.
Better Together brings all cultural groups as one community and creates strong bonds with each other while working in the same environment every day.
Conclusion
The cases between against and for Kmart as shown a huge development within business. As shown on the above about the case against Kmart you can tell that the store has lacked a lot with their product conditions. But as an ending result they’ve managed to come up with an excellent solution by making sure that all products are in good condition and in great quality. The case for Kmart had no concerns, all they’ve been doing In the past years is developing strategies to make the company achieve their goals and standards. In the past years and including current year Kmart has been improving with their customer services by providing goods to their customers and meeting their needs. having the best product that can be brought at the lowest price and knowing that they are always welcome to the store. Right now Kmart is running smoothly with no issues or concerns involved.
Kmart is a very successful retail store because their have met with the customer’s needs and wants and showing that the company wants to put a smile on every customer face. Also it gives the customer’s heaps of options on what they want because whatever they want it can be find at Kmart and comes in good quality. My overall result is that Kmart has not been a disappointed it has given customer the opportunity to buy items that a very affordable and anyone can buy whatever they want at the a low prise. It’s very thoughtful because a lot a on budget and don’t want to spend over the budget cost, this is why Kmart is the perfect solution to any on that’s on a budge knowing that every will end being very cheap.

Title: Overview of Corporate Social Responsibility of Amazon.
Word Count: 1569
Corporate Social Responsibility of Amazon.
Introduction to Amazon
Amazon is an E-commerce company which has its headquarters in Seattle and Washington, founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 (Schneider. 2018). It is one of the largest companies to sell various amounts of goods on the internet in the different countries of the world. It was started as an online bookstore but with time it added various things like the music, DVD’s, clothing and electronics on the internet (Schneider. 2018). As Schneider (2018) says that by the early 2017 the company had 269000 employees worldwide, but a recent figure in 2018 in the hike of the employees in the company touched the scale of 600000 workers in the company (Levy .2018), which is the highest employee’s scales seen ever in a single entity. Amazon played a vital role in the society as Nat (2018) says that company has upgraded its minimum wage to $15 usd, which will let a lot of workers lives improve, even if they are a part time or casual workers. Farfan(2019) stated that the company of Amazon has mainly its eyes on the customers , it (Amazon) wants to open various gates on the internet where consumers can easily find the information about the product they want to buy .Amazon’s CEO’s had a vision that he wanted to make a pathways where customer can buy anything (Rishnamurthy,2001).The two aspects on which we will be looking are community development and employees. Amazon positive aspect is about how has been working efficiently for the social contract between entity and the outside stakeholders and the shareholders, and in case negative aspect would be conditions of the workers of the warehouses (not being treated in good manner).
Case for (positive)
Amazon did and are doing a lot of activities in favour of their customers and the shareholders, but they also did a lot for the community. One was which supported the humanity across the globe in the ways that it gave the charity of almost $100 million united states dollars, it is called Amazon smile program which took place for the poor people (Nasdak and Amzn .2018) furthermore he stated that consumers were really happy to give the money to poor people who is not even able to get a single meal for him\herself. Massive and main support came up from the consumers as they contributed the most in this general noble cause. a good example of corporate governance and a social contract among the communities out there and a single firm Amazon. The consumers were positively affected towards it, there point of view would be or is that Amazon wanted to be a CSR (corporate socially responsible) to the society, consumers and be transparent in the eyes of the society and their consumers (Nasdak and amzn.2018). The societal groups got happy with this decision of charity from amazon to the poorer people who value the money. The implication is that everyone (customers) was responsible for the ethical act, because they were the ones who can give the charity to them through their purchases (Nasdak and amzn.2018).
Amazon smile is being a very popular program since it was started, it works in way that if any customer buys a product online, 0.5% of all the purchases the customer has made will be donated to the organisation they want to support, the insider team made it possible (Chen and insider picks ,2018). No stakeholder is affected by this program, but I also enhance the consumers to buy more products from Amazon smile, so they can participate in the good cause of the charity and they can even choose their favourite organisation in which they want to donate their money. This shows that the company is behaving in the ethical manner, and it knows its responsibilities towards the society and their consumers (Chen and inside picks ,2018). Amazon smile is all about to bring smiles on the faces of the poor people.
Amazon smile is a platform which is set up by the Amazon Inc. In (save the children .2019) Amazon smile there are a lot more reasons to donate the money which is worth saving a life of the millions of children across the globe, Amazon smile is helping 155 million children in the entire world. Amazon has made its roots strong in the view of their customers about their programmes and has cleared the rumours about their entity. Amazon serving in the various type of fields, but no one expected that they would give the free bananas to the community, it started in 2015 and is estimated to give out 1.7 million free bananas (stevens.2017). the banana programme disrupted the market but was a good plan for the stakeholders (consumers) and it helped the community as well.
Case against (Negative)
Brien (2017) says that, Amazon’s main aim is to bring benefits to the Customers and the shareholders, they are not as much concerned with the benefits of the stakeholder just like workers and the managers inside the company, who thereby relies on the company. It is going to affect a lot to people who have jobs in the company. According to Kantor and Strietfeld (2015) states that few workers who are suffering in the life are not even given a short span of time to recover, they are fired on silly reason.
Amazon is very confidential with its information that every single person who works in the company is supposed to sign an agreement, which does not allow them to leak the secrets of the entity (Kantor and Strietfeld ,2015). Generally, it may be so that no one can steal their intellectual property.
A news flamed that Amazon would not build its new headquarters in New York (Matsakis .2019). Which will affect the employees who were supposed to get a job and work in the amazon. Furthermore, stated by Matsakis (2019) Amazon is not going to open two corporate office which expected to employ 25000 people, which is a huge number of people. Amazon stated that an entity must have the good relations with the government of the state, otherwise it will be a flop move (Matsakis.2019), on the other hand the officials in the New York city said that the locals in the New York were so welcoming to Amazon and many more perks were to be given to the company, including $3 billion US dollars in tax breaks and a helicopter pad for the CEO Jeff Bezos (Matsakis.2019). The impact of not opening the headquarters in New York city will affect the income of thousands of individuals.
According to Hamilton (2018) Amazon workers went on to strike at the black Friday in Italy, Spain, France, and Germany in which hundreds of workers took part, and stood against the warehouse working conditions which according to them were very harsh for a human to survive in those conditions. Amazon employees said that they are just like number to them they do not even care about their workers who plays a very important role in maximising the profits of the entity, one of the employees said that a picker will have to pick the items efficiently in seconds (Sainato.2019). Dark secrets about Amazon’s warehouse were revealed by the workers of the company, they take 2-3 minutes for the bathroom and to avoid that the workers urinate in the dustbins so that they cannot miss their target and therefore, and once they had missed the target the management will terminate them on silly reasons (Ghosh.2018). Bezos wanted maximum output from the workers but was not ready to invest in the good will of the employees and did not even provided their warehouse workers with air conditioners in the hot summers and heaters in the cold winters (Lew.2015).
Conclusion
In conclusion, Amazon performance overall has both negative and the positive side, where the positive side describes that entity has given its customers the services very efficiently, as the consumers are the core stakeholders Amazon is always busy in making the strategic plans by which they can benefit their customers in a maximum way. Amazon also introduced the Amazon smile which allows a customer to give away 0.5 of all their purchases to the foundation they want to donate to. Almost $100 million USD are donated by this pathway through Amazon smile. Amazon has created a lot of facilities for the customers, shareholders and for the charity. Hence, the failures Amazon faced so it could not balance all the stakeholders at the same time, while their priority being the customers which lead them to not care about their employees in the warehouses. It has lived up to the values of their customers and the shareholders, on the other hand workers are inferior in the views of the managers and the officials of the company. Amazon did well when it revealed a way to give away charity, which has changed lives of the millions of poor children around the world. Although such decisions as not looking after the workers also has a great impact on the lives of the inside stakeholders. Amazon is acing in the world of the business with having revenue which is larger than many countries, and it has power to do well in the favour of their workers, they just must improve the conditions of the warehouse employees to be socially responsible. The Company should act in an ethical manner to make all the stakeholders and the shareholders happy.
