Dashboard Design Assignment Due Session 7 100/50 pts
REQUIRED ASSESSABLE ARTIFACT
You will suggest a real or imagined work situation where it is important to monitor
at least four streams of incoming information simultaneously. The purpose of this
assignment is to have the student assess the need for multiple information streams
and to design a dashboard using appropriate data visualization and the provided
instructions.
If you choose to use an existing Dashboard from work, provide a copy of the
existing Dashboard, and demonstrate how your re-design of that Dashboard
improves upon the original.
Dashboards should be designed using good design principles based on Few (2013)
and not based on “this is the way we have always done it at work.” Design the
appropriate information graphic or table for each stream of information. Create a
Dashboard which meaningfully arranges the depictions of your incoming
information streams that displays the status of each factor and the whole situation
easily and rapidly.
In addition to creating a Dashboard, you will very briefly report your situation to
the class and hand in a 2-3 page APA style paper your work situation, information
streams, representational depictions and offer the following:
• A hardcopy of your dashboard mock-up
• A narrative describing your dashboard with instructions of how to look at it, how to interpret it, and what each part and the whole mean
• A brief description about the situations being monitored
• A brief description about why monitoring each information stream is important
• A brief description about why you chose the graphic or tabular representation for each input stream.

Excel Dashboard Elements
So what exactly is a dashboard? Few (2013) defines a dashboard “…as a visual
display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more
objectives which fits entirely on a single computer screen so it can be monitored at
a glance” (2010).
Here is a Microsoft site that can help you get started with tools you already have to
create a dashboard using data about your industry. There are more advanced sites
on the following pages that may require some an understanding of Excel and pivot
tables. To get started, read the following data sheet from Microsoft:

1. Excel & PowerPoint Templates – (Easy) There are many basic Excel & PowerPoint dashboard
templates you can use to add
data and then create a
simple dashboard.
o Open a “New” .xlsx or .ppt file and then
enter “dashboard” in
the search box.
o Follow instructions for the template.
Search the web, social
media, and UGC sites for the
latest client, sale, or
performance data about your
industry to add to the
dashboard.

2. Excel Dashboards – (Moderate) Here is a video (15:13) with “Step by Step for Easy Excel Dashboards” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI_axvl21J0
• Use only RAW DATA • Create a TABLE not a
spreadsheet!
• Create a PIVOT Table. Make sure you define data as a table not a
sheet. Select the entire table as the
cell range.
• DASHBOARDs operate from a PIVOT Table. Add a blank
column to separate the dashboards
from the table.
• Please cursor inside a part of the table.
• INSERT SLICER (right side) Heart of the dashboard -lists all
the headers in the data
• Select which areas you want (6:27 min)
• Selection of the data in one table highlight the associated data in the
other tables

3. 3-D Data Table in Excel – (Moderate) You can watch this video (16:15) to learn how to build a 3D table. Below are some quick instructions from the
video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3plsR7jKZx8
• Create “Group” Table in Excel
o Click on a column of data and hold shift
key down.
o Click one sheet and then click on farthest
sheet to the right.
o Hold shift key down and copy table from
sheet one to 3 three
sheets
• Copy next column of data, hold shift key
down, and click farthest
sheet. Transpose data
from vertical to
horizontal.
• Use index function (6:41min)
• Use name manager to define sheets
Dataset2007 and define
the range of cells
• =Index(function) =Index dataset name, row, and cell (8:39 min).

4. 3D References in Excel – (moderate) build calculations from Excel “tabs” for an entire company or industry by watching this video (3:40)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmrqEP2eE48
• Hold down shift key to select all tab
• In first sheet, calculate auto sum of all table (2:10)
• Copy sheet and make one for entire company
5. OLAP Cube – (Expert) Your team could build an OLAP cube by watching “What is business intelligence and an OLAP cube?” video (10:17)
