Section One: Practical Part - Analysis of Data (60%)

For this section you will need to analyse some quantitative data using IBM SPSS Statistics and

write a report on your findings. Each question should consist of data analysis, commentary

and interpretation and should make good use of published sources to justify your choices.

You should write a well-structured and designed report of between 750 and 1000 words –

plus any diagrams and charts you produce and a list of references.

You need to use the dataset hals.sav and fluoridation.sav (available on Blackboard) using

IBM SPSS, which will include all of the following:

The directors of a medium sized company have asked you to investigate answers to several lifestyle related questions and write a short report for them. You have access to a Health and Lifestyle (HALS) survey of the health of the male employees in mid-life age or older that has recently been carried out (hals.sav). The questions you need to investigate – in some detail - are: N.B. For the first five questions you need to use your individual dataset provided.

1. What is the age distribution of the men? (Numerical and Graphical Presentation) [5 marks]

2. What proportion of men belongs to each category of own health (OWNH)? (Numerical and Graphical Presentation) [5 marks]

3. Provide numerical summary of the height and weight variables of the men? (Descriptive Statistics) [5 marks]

4. How is lung function (HYFEV) related to age, if at all? (Hypothesis Testing, Correlation and Linear Regression Analysis) [20 marks]

5. How different are the average lung functions (HYFEV) of the different social class

categories? (Hypothesis Testing, T Test) [ 10 marks]

6. Using the “Fluoridation.sav” dataset, are there a significant differences between fluoridation treatments in terms of the number of decayed, missing or filled teeth (DMFT)? (Use, for example, Non-Parametric Kruskal-Wallis One-Way ANOVA) [15 marks]

Use IBM SPSS Statistics to carry out appropriate analyses of the data “hals.sav” and “fluoridation.sav” respectively to investigate these questions in some detail, and write a report presenting your findings and explanations of what these analyses mean to the audience – who do not know much about statistics.

5. Format the tables and charts well, giving them titles, labelling the axes etc. Right click the charts to edit them.

6. Write your report according to the above brief, including the charts/diagrams and

analyses from IBM SPSS Statistics, with your comments/interpretations of the analyses, explaining what they mean. Right click the charts etc to copy and paste them into your report. Make sure any graphics are labelled correctly and explicitly referred to. Use the conventional report format.
