Running head: MEASUREMENT 1

MEASUREMENT 2

9/04/2020

Hello,

The intent of this assignment was to consider how other researchers define and operationalize the five identified constructs and then introduce two proposed constructs for your research study. Please review my feedback comments. Take some time to access and review Chapter 3, Operational Definition of Variables section of the dissertation recommended. This may facilitate conceptualization of this this topic.

Couple of considerations:

· Work on revisiting and refining this assignment (week 4), as opposed to week 3 at this time. We can revisit week 3 later if deemed necessary. In addition, this week (#4) is not officially due until this coming Sunday. You may also take time this Monday, if needed. Please have the assignment resubmitted by end of day Monday, September 7, 2020.

· I suspect you have good information. Although this information is not communicated clearly. Typically, there are only a few errors that when performed consistently within a document impedes clear communication. If the writing coach could bring your attention to a few errors and how to remedy these then the impact on the document's communication would be exponential. I have submitted a referral to the Academic Success Center for a writing coach. A copy of my referral is attached to the email that I sent you today re: this assignment (entitled Marcel: Important – Week 4 of BUS-7320 course].

As always – Contact me if you have questions or considerations – although be mindful that NCU is closed on Monday, September 7th in consideration of the Labor Day Holiday. Sharon.

Conceptual and Operational Definitions of Constructs

Testing of theories and hypotheses is the main purpose of a quantitative study. [Insert citation(s) to support.] Abstracts constructs has been established by researchers with a driven motive of ending that kind of testing. The measurements of these abstract constructs would offer data that is essential in the hypothesis testing process. The abstract constructs that an investigator chooses in a research entails a specific link that institutes theoretical or hypothesis proposals. Hence, testing hypothesis encompasses measuring the abstract constructs. The process of testing hypothesis gives rise to results that are more precise if the constructs are measured accurately and correctly and as well as in a scientific manner. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: I am not sure of the intent of this statement within this context. Please clarify.

However, questions have been raised regarding what the process of measurement of construct regards. To clarify this, measurement of abstract constructs involves investigators viewing the real world in a careful and intentional approach. Basically, these types of studies are what make up empirical research. Constructs measurement starts with indicating their operational and conceptual definitions. Aligned to this setting, this essay offers an operational and conceptual definition of each of the issued constructs. The meanings are founded on academic work explored in numerous databases. Additionally, the essay offers a measurement for the variables as well as a clarification on the measurement degree. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Marcel, as written, this discussion is a bit confusing. Begin to work on writing clarity and APA formatting. Consider taking some time to view the webinars in the Academic Success Center and perhaps schedule a meeting with one of the writing coaches. Typically, there are only a few errors that when performed consistently within a document impedes clear communication. If the writing coach could bring your attention to a few errors and how to remedy these then the impact on the document's communication would be exponential. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: You have good information. Be careful of the complexity of your writing. The intricate considerations of the topic will be complex; consider writing to facilitate the naive Readers' understanding. Use simple sentences and easily understandable terms. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: a construct is not directly observational. Nor are they directly measurable. Rather multiple concepts are used to 'construct' a measure of the construct. http://dissertation.laerd.com/constructs-in-quantitative-research.php

Attitude toward new technology

A 2016 study titled as “Investigating attitudes towards the use of mobile learning in higher education,” by Al-Emran, Elsherif and Shaalan will aid to demarcate this construct. In the study, the investigators researched the attitudes of learners and tutors towards the application of mobile gadgets in studying.

Conceptual definition:

Attitude alludes to the internal assessment of an object (material or abstract) by an entity. In the scenario of the study by Al-Emran, Elsherif and Shaalan, the conceptual demarcation of attitude is the tutors and learners internal assessment of the application of fresh technology (mobile technology) in advanced academic studies within United Arabs Emirates and Oman. The attitude of students and the tutors affects the ultimate embracing of mobile technology as a way of studying in tertiary-level academics. A study on attitude can aid investigators to comprehend the formation course of attitude towards fresh technology in tertiary-level education.

Operational definition:

Conferring to the article, the investigators offered two varied sets of the operational demarcation of the construct. Contrastively, ten operational demarcations of the Attitude hastened the measurement of the scholars towards mobile technology in tertiary-level reading. One of the demarcations was Mobile technology is a fruitful element for my study. Founded on this operational demarcation, the measurements for the variable would be strongly disagree, disagree, agree, and strongly agree. The degree of measurement that is established is ordinal. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Marcel – yes! Given your description of the 4-point range from strongly disagree to strongly agree – this would be an ordinal measurement level.

Contrastively, 10 demarcations of attitude hastened the measurement of tutor’s attitude towards application of mobile gadgets in tertiary-level education. Among those definitions is mobile technology us fruitful and valuable tool in learning. In this approach, the measurements for this variable would be strongly disagree, disagree, agree, and strongly agree. In addition, the degree of measurement created is ordinal. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Again, good. Yes.

Customer satisfaction

The 2015 article by name “Service quality and customer satisfaction of a United Arabs Emirates founded airline: An empirical investigation” by Hussain, Nassar, and Hussain founds the conceptual and operational demarcations of customer gratification.

Conceptual definition:

As per this study, the writers demarcate customer gratification in the conceptual sense as the case where clients procuring goods and services from a certain firm without exiting or complaining. This demarcation aided the writers to establish two hypotheses that they research. This definition helped the authors to develop two hypotheses that they investigate during the study. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Okay – what were these research questions and hypotheses?

Operational definition:

In the research, customer gratification is operationalized by two aspects namely universal passage gratification and punctual service delivery. Founded on this operational demarcation, the measurement for the variable would be strongly dissatisfied, dissatisfied, neutral and satisfied, and the degree of measurement created is ordinal. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Okay re: measurement level.

Self-Concept

The exploration by Fullwood, James and Chem-Wilson (2016), aided to demarcate self-concept both operationally and conceptually. In this research, the investigators study the effect of the internet on the self-concept of youngsters.

Conceptual definition:

In this exploration, self-concept denotes how youngsters’ reason about, perceive or evaluate themselves. During teenage life, little girls and boys start to understand themselves as well as understanding their facets. Among the elements of self-concept is the existential self, which is the logic of clarity from other individual. Contrastively, the definite self encompasses a youngster ascertaining that he/she continue living as an item in a world of numerous resembling items. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Note possessive

Operational definition:

Considering the operational side, the research demarcates self-concept as the lucidity of self that influences how one signifies oneself to the immediate world. Measuring of the variable in this study involved the self-concept clarity scale. As such, the measurement degree created will be nominal because the ensuing data will be definite. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: I am not sure of the intent of this statement within this context. Please clarify. Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Marcel – here is some additional information on the Self-concept Clarity Scale Conceptual Definition (this is the definition of what the construct represents theoretically and is intended to measure): “extent to which the [participants] self-beliefs are stable, clearly, and confidently defined.” Because the conceptual definition is not able to be measured using just a single measurement – the survey uses 12 different items to measure the construct. These ‘items’ are statements that the participant is asked to rate their agreement using a scale from 1 meaning strongly disagree to 5 meaning strongly agree with the statement. The document I saw did not give explicit instructions however, these responses may be either summed (for a range of 12 – 60) or averaged (for a range of 1 – 5) to form a single, composite score for the construct of self-concept clarity. Given the statements used for the participants to agree/disagree with: I suspect the lower the score, the less self-concept clarity.

Leadership style

This section demarcates leadership style operationally and conceptually applying the research by Adonderiere and Majuaskaite, which is branded as “Leadership style and job gratification in tertiary-level academic institutions.

Conceptual definition:

The conceptual demarcation of leadership styles denotes the approach in which a frontrunner offers ways to follow, executes plans, and inspires his/her indirect and direct reports. In this case, a frontrunner style is delegate, democratic, or autocratic.

Operational definition:

Conferring to the study, leadership styles influences devotees either negatively or positively. In efforts to ensure construct operation, the writer boiled the leadership style down to personal styles and requested contributors to state the style of their own superiors. Thus, leadership style was measured based on Servant Leadership Style, Transactional Exchange Leadership Style, Coach Leadership Style, and Human Relations Specialist Leadership Style. The measurement level created was ordinal.

Organizational Commitment

The work titled Influence of organizational rewards on organizational commitment and turnover intentions by Nazir, Shafi, Qun , Nazir and Tran was used to determine the conceptual and operational definitions.

Conceptual definition:

Commitment is a conception that entails an attitude and sensational dimension. Workers are determined to organizations via sensational links, as well as a worker’s assessment of the recent situations, whether the situations are what the workers anticipates o are what the worker might anticipate in imminent. Organizational determination hence encompasses an emotion of a worker’s recognition with the objectives of the organization, a sensation of participation in the tasks of the organization, as well as a sensation of loyalty to the organization.

Operational definition:

On this part, the operational demarcation of organizational determination is the admission of the values of the organization coupled with the willingness work hard for the sake of the organization’s wishes to attain main objectives. Additionally, it refers to the wish by members of staff to stay in the organization. Nevertheless, the construct is a dependent variable in the research, which dictates its behavior relies on the measurement of organizational returns.

The constructs I will measure in the intended dissertation research Comment by Sharon Kimmel: Marcel – here is an example of how the Operational Definition of Variables will be used in an NCU quantitative dissertation research study. Check out the Operational Definition of Variables section of Chapter 3 (I think it is on page 83). https://search-proquest-com.proxy1.ncu.edu/pqdtlocal1006252/docview/1765458268/EDFD458FF81D494EPQ/1?accountid=28180

In the half-done dissertation, I will evaluate employee turnover and consumer preferences.

Customer preferences

Conceptual definition:

Consumer preference means the tastes for services or goods that are exceptional to a single consumer. Normally, consumers fancy products that gratify them after procuring them.

Operational definition:

In value operation, I will determine customers’ preferences contingent to dislikes and likes. The established measurement level will be nominal scale.

Employee turnover

Conceptual definition:

Workers turnover determines the rate at which members of staff in a firm leave their ranks. Normally, it occurs over a definite time period like yearly. Workers turnover could be reflected on a departmental or organizational level.

Operational definition:

Workers turnover is always reliant on other aspects like workplace climate or leadership style. In this case, the construct will be reliant variable whose behavior will rely on the kind of independent variables. The research will reflect on workers turnover in the last 5 years. The established measurement level will be an interval scale. This will make it effective and self-sufficient to conduct a comprehensive study. The use of this method is accurate, factual and time saving. On another point, inference making is also easy following the entire course explained.
