Class Participation & Attendance

You are expected to prepare the readings and assignments as indicated on the syllabus. ZOOM class

discussions will be based on these materials, with individuals sharing their questions, ideas and

experiences. Students will be evaluated daily on the quality as well as quantity of their participation,

based on the value of their analysis, their contribution to their teams and to the class. ZOOM meetings

will be on WEDNESDAY evenings @ 7 pm. If you cannot attend the class meeting, they will be

recorded and posted on CANVAS. You MUST review these class meetings to be successful in this class

and I will review the ZOOM log or your access of the recording through CANVAS. . .

Each team will prepare a report containing the vision statement, mission statement, management

model, objectives and business strategy it plans to use to obtain the objectives. This report is

limited to two pages of text (you may attach as many graphs and tables as necessary). Also, teams

will produce a product portfolio analysis known as the BCG Matrix and the SPACE Matrix.

These submissions will be useful for developing your final analysis.

CAPSIM/CAPSTONE Simulation Preparation

The class begins 10/18. Before that class you should register for the CAPSTONE /Capsim simulation

@ www.capsim.com . The simulation for BUS 699. 2W1 is # C146524. You should also complete the

INTRODUCTORY LESSON found under “Getting Started” by Monday 10/23. You need to study the

STUDENT GUIDE found on the site and also posted on CANVAS.

In order to be successful in this class, you need to complete the additional prerequisite requirements by

Thursday 10/26. The prerequisites include: 1) the Introductory Lesson & Quiz 2) the Situation

Analysis and 3) four (4) rounds of the Solo Rehearsal Tutorial. They can also be found on the simulation

site under “Getting Started”. Complete this assignment in the recommended order.

BUS 699.2W1 FALL II 2023 Page 3

Read the TEAM STUDENT GUIDE and the INDUSTRY CONDITIONS REPORT both found on the GETTING STARTED page of the simulation.

Capstone Simulation

This class will use Management Simulations, Inc. CAPSTONE simulation software. This business

simulation consists of competing teams, running hypothetical companies that make electronic sensors.

All teams start with identical positions and compete over several “years” or decision rounds, where

each round is the equivalent of one year. The simulation is cross-functional and integrates all major

elements of the business decision-making process. Each team will have the opportunity to set corporate

strategies and apply strategic concepts and techniques within a practical decision-making framework.

The effectiveness of the strategy and its implementation will determine the successful competition with

the other teams.

Students will individually complete 4 rehearsal rounds of the simulation after completing

introductory lesson and situation analysis by 10/26 .

The teams will complete practice rounds before the competition simulation rounds begin.

Participation in these rounds as well as the simulation rounds results is counted toward the

simulation grade.

Students are encouraged to use MSI for help as needed. Although they cannot offer specific advice on

company strategy, they can provide insight and answer questions in a timely manner. They are available

Monday – Friday by phone and by email through the simulation website www.capsim.com.

Peer Evaluation

Each student must submit a final peer evaluation on the members of his/her team. Also, during the

session students will complete two (2) evaluations through the simulation software program. The student

must also evaluate his/her individual performance as a team member. Students will rank members on

participation, presentation, and contribution to the learning experience. All grades and comments will

be kept strictly confidential. The final evaluation is a written narrative that should be typed and

contain detailed information about the team member’s contributions. The student should take

this requirement seriously and give thought to the final rankings because identical grades on

group assignments are not a given outcome. The form is attached to the syllabus.

Team Strategic Analysis

Each team of students will conduct and present a strategic analysis on its company. The analysis will

include information gathered from outside sources, current periodicals, and Internet resources. The

strategic analysis outline provided should be used.

General written requirements are:

• a well-organized appendix

• numbered pages

• subheadings to identify different sections of the paper.

• a cover page, letter to the shareholders/executive summary of firm performance, table of

contents, list of exhibits/tables.

• a list of individual team member responsibilities.

• typewritten, bound in a professional manner.

• clearly written, using proper spelling, grammar and sentence structure on the academic level of a

master’s level research paper

• suitable for presentation to the Board of Directors of the company.

BUS 699.2W1 FALL II 2023 Page 4

The focus of this paper should be an honest and critical assessment of how well the team’s business plan

succeeded. The paper should NOT be a review of the technical decisions made in each “round” of

the simulation, but rather a strategic look at the execution of the company’s strategy as well as the

ramifications on total company performance and attainment of strategy.

CompXM Individual Assessment FINAL EXAM

Students will conduct an individual simulation and exam to assess their understanding of the concepts in

the course and to assess strength in strategic decision making. More information on this will be

discussed in class. Five points (5) will be added to your COMPXM grade if you complete the class

course evaluation.

Mid Term Exam. This exam is multiple choice. The exam will be exceptionally helpful in preparing

for the individual COMPXM assessment as well as performance on the team simulation results. The

exam covers class text readings, simulation team guide and lectures and is timed.
