Do you agree with the steps mentioned below as a leader and what ideas can you add from your experience that worked for you? What items items you found to be compelling and enlightening?
In my current role I am labeled as a middle manager for the organization I work for. This role is progressively a leader and follower. In the organization my role is to follow my boss and set an example for my employees. This means that the followers or employees below me need to be able to trust me, and trust that my manager is sending the right information. In our text Northouse (2018) notes that followership has a negative emphasis due to followers not being recognized as much as leaders. As, a middle manager I need to be able to see the needs of each employee as well as the management above me.
Explain the steps that leadership should take to be effective
Leaders always need to know their team, they need to be able to place the pieces of the chessboard to make the most effective team (Northouse, 2018). This is after there is clear communication about the goals of the organization. The first step I feel that is important is building relationships with employees. As a leader you will be more successful in the long run if you can connect with someone to find out what motivates the employee. I think the most important is providing clear communication as to what is expected of the organization and goals set forth. If there is the least little bit of wiggle room then the communication has failed and can cause problems.
Application of steps and most appropriate for me
Honestly out of everything that I have read so far is I would like clear communication and situational leadership (Northouse, 2018). In my current role as office coordinator my director is a good boss. I am in the middle management position at my current job. My boss likes to know everything that goes on since she has been with the company the longest. She has had some issues with the dental program manager, it does not help that the manager likes to nitpick. I had been given clear communication when I started to make sure that I got along with everyone, but an incident happened that caused that to change. The dental manager had moved pictures in a location that was not hers to move. Then it became a problem, as I would like to get over the divide between both departments with communication. My boss does not want to bury the hatchet. It seems that clear communication and a little behavioral leadership at this point may fix the problem.
I have tried working with the dental clinical coordinator to try and get a few things accomplished and I continue to get into trouble. This makes it hard to make changes to processes when my boss holds a grudge, but it does not help that the dental program manager wants to tattle tell on everyone she can to make herself look good. The program manager also makes her employees fear her which strains the relationship more.
