Week Six Introduction:

During this last week, we will look more at supply chain management. As mentioned previously, an organization will not be better than the supply chain that supports it. A passive approach to supply chain management will not provide an organization with the cost, quality, and timeliness necessary to compete in today’s world.

Week Six Objectives:

1. Apply Christian principles in critical thinking.

2. Relate the problems of supply chain management to strategic goals.

3. Examine the issues involved in making location decisions.

4. Apply lean concepts to a project.

…the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

2 Timothy 4: 6-8

Paul, looking back on his life, was content that he had finished the job God had called him to do. Stephen Covey in his famous book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, told us to begin with the end in mind. We should consider how we want our lives to end, and then live them that way. Knowing that one day we will, like Paul, look back on our lives, let us commit to living them in a manner that will allow us to say that we have “kept the faith and fought a good fight.”

Be like Paul and finish strong. Be proud of your work.

Learning Activity 6.2: Supply Chain Management Discussion

Introduction and Purpose of Assignment

Managing the supply chain is an important part of successful operations management in both manufacturing and services. Understanding the key measures of supply chain success will aid the manager in addressing supply chain issues. An organization’s success depends on the ability of its supply chain to perform well. Successful supply chain management will align with the organization strategy.

Objectives

· Relate the problems of supply chain management to strategic goals. (6.2)

Theory and Context

Consider the Measures of Supply Chain Performance. A quotation attributed to Peter Drucker, the father of modern management is, “What gets measured gets managed.” However, Ben Hunt-Davis presents an interesting question in the video – “Will it Make the Boat go Faster?” Consider how that relates to the alignment of organization strategy with supply chain management. Will the supply chain decision support the organization strategy?

Introduction and Purpose of Assignment

Many factors are involved in the decision to locate an organization. Many organizations have been forced to close because of their wrong location. Knowing how to make location decisions is another skill that Operations Management can offer the manager.

Objectives

· Examine the issues involved in making location decisions. (6.3)

Theory and Context

Considering how the product is moved from the first acquisition of raw material to the end user requires decisions all along the supply chain. Where facilities are located is one of those decisions that needs to be determined when considering how products reach their final destination.

Learning Activity 6.4: Lean Project: Final Paper

Introduction and Purpose of Assignment

Now is the time to finalize your lean project! You have worked to build, manage and complete a project at home, work, or your church. The inclusion of others has helped to bring this project to fruition for the benefit of others. This paper will provide the opportunity to explain the steps, actions, and accomplishments realized as a result of using this outstanding tool.

Objectives

· Apply lean concepts to a project. (6.4)

Theory and Context

The lean tool that you’ve decided to use should be shown to be a powerful, effective tool whose use can be employed in any number of projects, and in a myriad of situations. Its scope of use is easily applied and fosters exceptional controls, efficiencies, the elimination of waste and the means by which to sustain improvements over time.

Instructions

1. Ensure that your paper includes all following elements, and meets the criteria for content and analysis provided in the outline below and in the project rubric.

a. Describe the current condition or status. Also in this section describe the problems associated with the current situation.

b. Describe the desired lean improvement to be made. Use lean terminology.

c. Discuss the desired outcome of this change. What are the benefits? Use supporting expert opinion to validate your expectations of the project.

d. Describe how this would be successfully implemented. The best plans fail due to poor implementation. Prior assignments in this course should aid your development of this section of the paper.

e. Describe how this lean improvement will be maintained. Without a system in place to monitor and maintain, old habits creep back in. What will be done to prevent this from happening?

2. Meet expectations provided in the Paper Writing rubric.

3. Provide at least four academic resources.

4. Submit the paper to your facilitator as an attachment in the dropbox titled Wk6 Lean Project: Final Paper by the end of the week.

Learning Activity 6.5: Lean Project: Final Presentation

Introduction and Purpose of Assignment

You have been building and, hopefully completing, your lean project. You have planned this, identified who would be involved, determined its benefits and purposes, and used a lean process tool to complete a project to benefit your family, coworkers, or church members. Now it is time to show where you started and the results of that which you have done.

Objectives

· Apply lean concepts to a project. (6.4)

Theory and Context

Lean processes have been used to guide you through this project. Lean establishes a specific step-by-step process to not only complete the project, but to maintain the efficiencies over time.

Instructions

1. Use an electronic media such as PowerPoint, Prezi, or other to create your presentation.

2. The presentation should include:

a. 10-15 Slides

b. Professional presentation

c. Fulfill the expectations provided in the presentation rubric located in the syllabus.

3. Ensure that your presentation covers the following elements from your paper:

a. Describe the current condition or status. Also in this section describe the problems associated with the current situation.

b. Describe the desired lean improvement to be made. Use lean terminology.

c. Discuss the desired outcome of this change. What are the benefits? Use supporting expert opinion to validate your expectations of the project.

Grading Guide or Rubric:

Assignment will be scored based on the completeness of the submission. The instructor will provide feedback addressing the student’s completion of the work and what the scores indicate. Formatting, mechanics, and grammar will be considered in the assigned grade.

6.5 Lean Project – Final Presentation
