1. Read local newspaper, Journals, Internet searches…. To understand emerging needs in the market place.
2. Talk to friends, relatives, and other small business owners about ideas or needs the market is not meeting.
3. Think about what services you personally wish were available.
4. Look for opportunities to improve an existing product or service and check whether there is a demand for that improvement.
5. Consider whether the market is not being filled for a certain niche.
6. Eliminate ideas you won’t really enjoy.
7. On the other hand, look for opportunities with high demand, even if it’s not a current interest.
8. Look for a business with low start-up costs or that pays up front if you don’t have much money to start with.
9. Look for a business that will have repeat customers.
10. Avoid seasonal businesses, unless you can afford the time
off during the slow season.
11. Don’t try to compete with discounters or well-established
business on the basis of price alone.
12. Service businesses are the easiest to start, but the
hardest to sell.
