In Bullet in the Brain, Tobias Wolff uses vivid imagery to illustrate how ‘Anders’ evolves throughout the story from being hardened and angry to being helpless and losing self-control.
Introduction
· Anders was disgruntled upon arrival
· Became uneasy when the robbers showed up
· Seemed to be experiencing new and rapid emotions
· Lost control of all thoughts when shot
Body Paragraph 1 (at least 9-10 sentences)
· Seemed to be an unpleasant man
· Anders presented as angry and in murderous temper
· Book critic
· Other people’s convo and doings affected his mood enormously
· Became more upset when bank teller closed
Body Paragraph 2
· When the robbers entered and overpowered the security guard the mood of the main character changed from angry to confused.
· When he had a personal encounter with the robber (super up close and personal) he still kept a brave face, but was nervous
· Due to his keen critic senses and nervousness (both emotions trying to overtake the other) he began noticing small and details
· Details about robber. His attire, eyes, breath and tone
· At that point he became vulnerable
Body Paragraph 3
· Due to his vulnerable state, he experienced loss of character he began laughing which caused robber to become upset
· He noticed Details of the paintings on the ceiling that he never really took note of (distracting himself)
· This caused him to loose control of his nervous laughter
· His thoughts were no longer focused on his business at hand, but critiquing the painters art on the ceiling of the bank
· Due to lack of focus, he upset the robber and got shot.
Conclusion (at 5-6 sentences)
· When he got shot he became completely helpless
· Lost complete control of mind, body and emotion
· He was unable to control his thoughts
· He died thinking about something so small and irrelevant but it made him laugh in the past.
· That is when we saw his jovial side
· He transitioned completely from disgruntled critic to jovial young boy
