Assessment 2: Individual essay
(This essay comprises 70% of the total course marks).
What are some of the key HRM issues a Non-European multinational (i.e. an Asian
or US-based organisation) may face in setting up an office in Aberdeen?
Identify a large, well known multinational company of your choice that does NOT
currently have a base in Aberdeen. The purpose of this assignment is to review and
evaluate some of the HRM issues it would face if it decided to open an office in
Aberdeen. You have to focus on two topics, outlined below, each of which should be
evaluated in equal depth. In evaluating each topic, you should link to, and utilise
relevant HRM literature, concepts, and examples to develop and illustrate your
argument
This is a 2,500 word assignment (plus or minus 10%), which is made up of two parts,
each of which have a maximum word length of 1,000 words. (You should have a brief
introduction and conclusion, of about 250 words each).
Part 1: International HRM and expatriates
A key issue involved with a non-European multinational setting up an office in
Aberdeen is the need for some expatriate workers (such as senior corporate
management) to move to, and work in the city. Using your knowledge of relevant
academic literature discuss some of the most significant HRM issues a foreign
multinational is likely to face in moving overseas, expatriate workers to work in
Aberdeen.
Part 2: Training and Development
Using your knowledge of relevant academic literature discuss the training and
development issues a non-European multinational is likely to face in setting up an
office in Aberdeen. In addressing this topic, think about the training and development
needs that may be necessary for expatriate workers moving to Aberdeen to make
working there effective and successful.

You should submit only an electronic copy of your assignment. Electronic copies
should be uploaded to MyAberdeen.
Submission deadline:
For students attending courses taught only via block teaching: completed
essays must be submitted by 10am, Monday 4th March 2019
For Global Health and part-time students your essay must be submitted by
10am Monday 11th March 2019.
Criteria for Assessment: Your essay will be marked against the elements outlined
in the table below and the associated criteria. It should be noted that additional
emphasis will be placed on the ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Argument’ criteria in determining
your overall grade:
