According to Drew, the word shalom has a much broader and deeper meaning (2007). Shalom is a term that refers to “harmony everywhere – between people and nations, between people and nature, in the natural order, between creatures and their Creator” (Drew, 2007, p. 178). If we take the time and view the world around us we can see this occurring.
Recently one of my co-workers was diagnosed with cancer. She is extremely young and has children under the age of four at home. The company rallied together and collected donations for her, along with items for the children and delivered to her home. This was to help her while she was off and to brighten the kid’s day. This past weekend a benefit was held to raise money for her family, it raised $10,000. The generosity that was extended by others was amazing.
The church I go to when I go visit my parents just completed a project for babies. They worked with another church and made boxes for newborns. Each box contained booties, hats, diapers, onesies and other items. The boxes where made for low income parents. I am sure as a parent this would be much appreciated with the expense of a newborn.
I was at the grocery store this summer and the lady beside me had a cart full of items. She had two children with her and looked exhausted as she tried to check out. The guy behind her told the clerk to add his items to hers and told her to have a good day. He told her the groceries were on him. She started to cry she was so thankful. Acts of kindness are everywhere.

Advertising has not changed and will not change in the future. The idea of advertising is to sell and promote. The ethical stance comes from, are we doing this at any cost? “The ads rarely tell us what the product actually does but suggest that buying it will give us a higher standing among our peers, make us more attractive to the opposite sex or provide access to a more exciting life-style” (Turner, 2016).
In other words, the advertising is used to trick our minds and play with how we see things realistically. But God has provided us with the skill and ability to reason, and chose right from wrong (Turner, 2016). Lying and deceiving goes against what we are taught is right. We need to keep this in mind as we create the ad, as well as look beyond what is being communicated as the buyer.

In Chapter 14, Cornelius Plantinga provides an imaginative description of a renovated world. Where do you see signs of the Second Adam's renewing work in our day? Provide at least three items.
Shalom is everywhere and is seen without a video camera or TV screen. Our text states, “To look for shalom is to look for harmony everywhere-between people and nations, between people and nature, in the natural order, between creatures and their Creator” (Drew, 2007, p. 178). Cornelius Plantinga provides the exact image if shalom filled our world. However, I have been touched by acts of kindness and synchronicity from people in this world, stories below.
One sign that caught my attention was hurricane Harvey that recently struck parts of Texas in 2017 and the amount of devastated homes, communities, and affects it had on people’s lives. I noticed that in this series of unfortunate events people reached out to help strangers in need. Ordinary people use boats and other methods to rescue people and animals from harsh situations. This is an example of the media and newspapers reporting on everyday heroes and noble acts of one another. This event although tragic brought a sense of unity towards each other and exposed the raw beauty of mankind. Video link below!
Another sign was around Christmas time 2016 when a 7 year old little girl was on the news for donating all her presents to Muncie Firefighters Local 1348’s Toys for Tots program. This kind act inspired others including myself to donate toys and join the movement. Kids and parents from the area heard about the girl and what she was doing at such a young age and wanted to be a part of it. The story was first covered by a local news outlet and then grown into dozens of people wanting to join the cause. The mother of the little girl stated, “It gives me hope there are still good people out there” (Kirby, 2016). Article in reference section!
The last sign is the ongoing awareness towards animals and Earths resources. Decades ago many of these issues were less popular in our culture. Today, people including myself understand that although God gave man dominion over animals according to Genesis 1:26-28, does not mean that we have the right to abuse and destroy. To quote famous Uncle Ben in Spiderman, "with great power, comes great reasonability" we must rule our dominion with clarity and realize our own wrongdoings. This awareness is a sign of shalom between man and nature. Although we have a lot of realization and growth ahead of us, it is a step towards a more renovated world.

The article titled “Why Marriage is (And Isn’t) the Point”, by Dale Kuehne focuses on how culture is losing faith in the sanctity of marriage. The article speaks of many truths in terms of same-sex relationships, no-fault divorce, and younger generation delaying marriage longer than any other in history. So why has our perspective towards marriage changed? The cultural shifts in the 1960s “revised our culture understanding of marriage, love and sexuality” (Kuehne, 2016). Cultural shifts in 1960s and on, “believe that all people have the right to be married as long as they both shall choose”, including todays same sex marriages (Kuehne, 2016). Today more than “40% of our children are now born outside of marriage and when children of divorce parents are added to the equation, a majority of children spends their entire childhood living without both biological parents” (Kuehne, 2016).
The Author believes that Christians should engage the marriage debate more vigorously. There is a real fear that healthy marriage is dwindling and with the current cultural mindset towards marriage we are doing the precious sanctity of marriage a disservice. I honestly, agree with Dale’s article and am one of the people who waited later in life to get married. Dale states, “that today crisis is not over the definition of marriage; it is a crisis of relational hope” (Kuehne, 2016). Fewer people believe they will be married for life, so why get married. I was never big on getting married which is normal in our culture. The article brings a lot of my concerns and perspectives towards marriage to the surface and promotes the restoration of Christ as Christians by engaging in healthy debates on marriage.
Take care,
Deana
