for honest business writer
"Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan (2006)
The goal of the author was to change the public’s mentality on language (English). Amy Tan explains that a language is only a tool of communication and not a tool for measuring the knowledge or intelligence of people. When growing up the author mother's language was broken hence people used not to take her seriously. This made the writer write to change people's mentality on language.
The key points of the piece that have been discussed in the above piece are:
· Never judge a person's intelligence by their English-language use is affected mostly by one's background hence poor language may be used to present an essential message.
· A language is a tool of trade- language is only used for communication between two or more parties
· The quality of English used does not lower or higher the quality of what is to be said- poor English is associated with imperfect thoughts, and these people are often not taken seriously which is not the case as language is just a carrier of the message.
· People's idea of perfect language use lowers esteem in people who are not fluent- poor language use makes one's self-esteem poor as one even starts seeing themselves as inferior or not wise enough.
· Poor language coherency limits the rate of people expressing themselves- many people who are not fluent often tend not to raise their views or ideas as they may fear not being able to explain their thoughts.
The audience of the piece according to me is the public. This is because she is seen to address public to change their mentality on people who use proper or poor English. Amy Tan discusses the issue of Asian American's not venturing into writing or literature related courses because they are made to believe that they are unable to express themselves in fields of writing. Amy Tan also addresses the issue of her mother being ignored or given poor services as she is not able to communicate herself fluently. This hence pushes her to address the issue by explaining that English is just a language and it's not in any way related to intelligence.
