BRIEF PROPOSAL OF RESEARCH
I have chosen to provide reports, research, and a professional analysis on Winn-Dixie and will be explaining my perspective about it being a dysfunctional organization. As an employee of Winn-Dixie a few years ago I have noticed the changes made on many different levels. I have been on both sides of the table as an employee and management. This company carries many traits and characteristics of the topics discussed in this course.
Beginning in 1914 William Milton Davis and his four sons owned and ran a small general store called Davis Mercantile in Barley, Idaho, which focused in selling over-the counter goods on credit. Even though the store was short lived, this was where Winn Dixie was first established. By the early 1920’s, Davis’ business started to suffer substantial deficits and in 1925 he was forced to borrow $10,000 from his father which he used to move his family to Miami where he bought a grocery store named Rockmoor Grocery. Over the next years Davis acquired four other store outlets and in 1927 changed the name of his company to Table Supply. The company continued to develop throughout the Great Depression by way of methodically acquiring other failed retail chains.
William Davis passed away in 1934, leaving his four sons to continue his legacy. Around the end of the Great Depression, in 1939, the Davis brothers acquired 51% of shares in a competing retail chain and in 1944 combined the two companies under one name- Winn Lovett- later moving the company headquarters to Jacksonville, Florida. By 1952 Winn-Lovett received a place in history for being the first corporation based in Florida on the New York Stock Exchange. They kept expanding, purchasing extra retail chains and in 1955 reformed its name to Winn Dixie after purchasing the Dixie Home retail chain, which owned an enormous quantity of 117 stores, distributed throughout half a dozen States in Southeastern USA. Even with numerous obstacles and changes to be a successful company the brothers had to understand how leadership and organizational behavior effected not only themselves but society and the industry. Looking at this company as a previous employee, customer, and now analyst I will explain the different profiles of individuals that include descriptions of values, attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and personality, while examining how these factors influence decision making in the workplace. And I will also be evaluating how motivation affects organizational behavior and the achievement of their organizational goals.
A brief narrative description of the organizational behavioral problem that you would like to research and resolve.
Winn-Dixie has had a history of discrimination against women, minorities’; unfair wages, promotions. These matters have led to quite a few lawsuits against Winn-Dixie that have even went to the Supreme Court of the United States government.
A preliminary behavioral problem statement in the form of a researchable question.
