Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

The group method of social work can help an individual enhance his or her life through group experiences. Social goals focus on social consciousness and social responsibility which helps the community members to solve social issues and bring about social change. Farley et. al. (2011) explains that the social goals model is guided by identifying and understanding the policies and goals, determining that the problem is appropriate for the group, and assessing the consequences and alternatives for any action that could be taken. This model can be seen in the settlement house movement and the women’s movements. The remedial goals model of group work is focused more on the individual behavior who are unable to adjust to social relations. A group will work to achieve change for an individual by supporting the individual to address the problem of dysfunction (Farley et. al, 2011). The reciprocal model aims to ensure that both the individual and society are benefited from the change. According to Farley et. al., (2011) this model views the individual as an abstraction that can be studied, understood, and treated only in the relation to the systems in which they are apart of.

The settlement house movement is an example of the social goals model since is brought about social change and empowerment to those who felt oppressed. This model would be effective to use when a group wishes to be heard or feel less oppressed. Remedial goals on the other hand would be more effective in a halfway house. Those who were released from jail would need individual treatment to be able to adjust socially and personally to form appropriate social relations. Lastly, the reciprocal goals model encompasses both the social goals and remedial goals models by focusing on the major concerns of both models.

Hello,

The group method can assist the group(s) (1) in achieving mutually determined goals; (2) in achieving desirable change for individuals experiencing personal, family, occupational, and adjustment problems; (3) in developing self-enhancement and individual enrichment; and (4) in achieving a combination of treatment, self-enhancement, and personal fulfillment (Farley, Smith, & Boyle, 2011).

Social group model is closely identified with the group interest and effort. It is likely to address itself to problems within communities and is practiced in settlement houses, PTA organizations, and community service and neighborhood councils. This model is closely identified with the group interest and effort. The Remedial Model prime focus of this model is about treatment individual’s behavior. This model primarily deals with individuals who suffer social and personal adjustment in social relations. Individual dysfunction and deviant behavior which is not approved by the society are brought into the planned group work environment and through the means of group work approach, deviant behavior of the individuals is normalized. Hence it is often regarded as clinically oriented in approach. Group worker adopts this model while dealing with a group of a person with an emotional problem. This model enables the group work to facilitate interaction among the group to achieve change. This model is widely used in mental health care, correctional institution, family service organization, counseling center, and school and health care as well (Farley et. Al., 2011).

Reciprocal Model has been influenced and derived from the work of system theory, field theory, social psychological theory, and the generic principles of social work. Many of the scholars often called it the amalgamation of social goals and remedial models. The model came into reflection when society and individuals experience interference in their mutual striving, the conflict arises from this perspective the use of reciprocal model may become imperative. This model considers the individual and group are the significant components and here the worker roles appeared to be facilitative in nature, that is why the model is known to be a Mediating model of social group work (Farley, et. Al., 2011).

Social goal model is to help the communities, remedial model is about helping individuals, and reciprocal model about helping both and individual or a group like the community.
