The Black Panther King Ta’Challa
Blending of African myth
Original creation
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1966, the Black Panther (King T’Challa of the mythical nation of Wakanda) was a character who would only occasionally appear in Marvel stories with the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
T’Challa represented a sharp contrast to the racist “Jungle Stories” printed by many comic agencies. Authors/Illustrators Don McGregor, Rich Buckler, Billy Graham, and Gil Kane created a two-year storyline in the early 70’s to flush out the characters, creating the first black superhero in American myth. The “Panther’s Rage” series created an all-black cast – a first for comics
Villains
Erik Killmonger
Ulysses Klaue
The utopia of Wakanda
The fictional central-African country of Wakanda is the ancestral home of the Black Panther and the five-tribes of Wakanda.
The wealth of Wakanda comes from Vibranium, a rare metal that is strong, moldable and very valuable. In order to preserve Wakanda’s treasures and people from imperialism and the greed of the outside world, they hide “in plain sight”.
Utopia – an idea state/nation that promotes equality both socially and economically.
The outside force of the villain Ulysses Klaue represents the imperialist approach to African land, wealth.
Black Panther (2017 Marvel film)
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther leaned heavily on the recent interpretations of Wakanda and the characters of the universe to challenge ideas of justice in the face of betrayal and brutality.
The film grossed 1.34 billion dollars in the global box office and won three Oscars (first MCU film to do so).
