Shannon Schreier
Learning Objectives
Students should understand which kinds of sources are available to them
Students should know how to find and identify those sources
Thesis
By better understanding the needs and locations of good sources for cultural research, a student will have a paper with valid, reputable evidence and information.
Types of Sources
Primary- Sources from the person or period you are discussing, i.e. documents, objects, clothes
Secondary- Sources that use primary sources to prove a point or answer questions, usually for a more professional audience, i.e. academic journal, movie critique
Tertiary- Sources that report on the secondary sources, usually for a general audience, i.e. textbooks, encyclopedia articles
How to Find Them
Librarians- they can help you locate documents within the library, find a librarian specific to your field of study who can help your search
Databases- library databases allow you to search by title, author, date, and type of document, the more detailed the search parameters, the more accurate the results
Checking Relevance and Reliability
Relevance- look at the index, table of contents, and the first and last paragraphs of the chapters
Reliability- look at by whom, where and when it was published, the author, and the existence of a bibliography
