Book Review & Application

It is very important to cite your sources. If you use content from another source without citing it, that is considered plagiarism (even if it was not your intent). I check for plagiarism via “Safe Assign” in blackboard. Any plagiarized work will automatically receive a “0”. To help you properly cite your work, below you will find some examples and tips. I use APA formatting and this is formatting that I want you to use as well. The examples below are in proper APA formatting.

There are two types of citation: direct and indirect. Direct citation refers to when you are quoting something or someone directly. For example, if you were to directly quote the book in your reflection paper, this direct quote would need to have quotations around it and include the page numbers. Below are examples of two ways you might directly quote something.

“Another strength, more conceptual in nature, results from the way the trait approach highlights the leader component in the leadership process” (Northouse, 2018, p. 30).

As Northouse (2018, p. 30) states, “Another strength, more conceptual in nature, results from the way the trait approach highlights the leader component in the leadership process”.

In comparison, indirect citation (which is preferable in most cases – only quote something if there truly isn’t another way to phrase something), involves you paraphrasing the author. In this case, no quotes are needed but you still need to cite the author. Below is an example of the above quote paraphrased.

The trait approach has many strengths as a theory of leadership, including the fact that it is more conceptual in nature as a consequence of it highlighting the leader component in the process of leadership (Northouse, 2018).

In both cases, you would need to provide the full citation in the reference page at the end of the paper. All elements of your written project will need to incorporate sources (except possibly the leader interview) and should have both citations and a reference page.

My quick tip for creating references: go to scholar.google.com and search the title of the article or book. If you click the ” button, a full citation will already appear for you to copy and paste into your reference page (although you will need to adjust the font and make sure the references are “hanging”).
