Book Review Assignment GEOG 1700 Due April 16 prior to class on HuskyCT Book: The Milk Lady of Bangalore by Shoba Narayan While you are reading the book, you should take notes on the following issues :

• What is the author’s main goal in writing the book?

• What are the author’s main points?

• What kind of evidence does the author present to make her points? Is it convincing?

• Is the book well written? Think about style and whether it is easy to understand.

• What group of readers is the book written for? What is its genre? (General audience, students, experts?)

Read the links about writing a book review on HuskyCT. Your review should have two main goals:

1. Inform the reader about the content of the book 2. Provide an evaluation of the book’s quality

Your book review should be a minimum of 1 1/2 pages and no more than 3 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt font, 1-inch margins. It must have the following components:

• Introduction/thesis statement (One or two paragraphs) o Make sure you state the name of the book and the author’s name.

• Summary of the content (This should be about 1/3 of your review) o Summarize key points, providing examples. o Paraphrase information, but the use of short quotes may also be appropriate.

• Evaluation of the book o Provide a critique of the book, including your opinion, using examples from the book. o Did you find the book interesting or entertaining? o Can you make any connections between the book and topics presented in Chapter 12

• Your conclusion, including whether you would recommend the book to someone else. To earn the best grade, your review needs to be well-written, show evidence of strong critical thinking, and be free from grammatical and spelling errors.
