Chapter 5
Pgs. 51–53. Wang Lung’s wife presents rice cakes and their baby son to the Old Mistress of the ruling house. Wang Lung is so proud of his success as a farmer and having a beautiful son. He is moving up on the social scale. He and his wife discuss how the excesses of the rich rulers are making them lose their land to pay their expenses. They plan to buy the land.
Theme: Hard work moves a person from poverty to prosperity.
A disaster might occur because Wang Lung becomes fearful about someone stealing his son.
