For the remaining blog posts, #4 - #7, you will apply the concepts from the background material to the paintings you selected from the Met collection and your museum visit. For blog post #4, I recommend focusing on concepts from weeks 2-4 (knowledge, assumptions, shadows). I do not expect you to use all of the concepts from the background material. Nor do I expect you to discuss all of your painting/drawing selections. I just want you to demonstrate that you've learned something by applying concepts from class. I recommend focusing on just a few concepts, explaining them clearly, and applying them appropriately to as many paintings as you deem relevant. These blog posts are worth 10 points and will be graded on both content and style:

To make it easier to understand your blog, please add images of the works you discuss. (That way, we won't have to scroll through your previous blogs to find the relevant image.)

Content (6 points)

Your analysis should demonstrate:

that you've looked at the painting carefully and thoughtfully.

that you understand the concepts and terminology from class. (Perspective, image formation, Limits of our perceptual knowledge, Perception involves knowledge about physics, geometry, and light, Perception involves knowledge about objects & scenes )

that you can apply these concepts to an artwork.

Style (4 points)

The writing should be:

clear

organized in logical and fluid way, most likely this will require organizing your ideas into paragraphs.

free of distracting errors in grammar or spelling.

original. Remember: Everything you write for this class should be in your own words. Quotations, even when properly cited, are not allowed.

Some advice:

Avoid generalities (observations that would be true about any painting) and instead focus on specific aspects of the painting as they relate to specific concepts from class.

Keep in mind that this class focuses on the visual aspects of paintings and drawings (what visual perception tells us about painting and what painting can tell us about visual perception) . If you wish to also provide historical context, biographical notes, your emotional reaction, your interpretation of the work's symbolism, that's fine, but my assessment will focus on the part of your analysis that relates to the course material.

In general, less is more: It's usually better to explore a couple of concepts in depth rather than touch on many concepts superficially.

Similarly, a short blog that is concise and well-written is better than a long blog that is rambling and unfocused. You can probably make a couple of clear, interesting, and specific points in 300 words.

If you use terms from this class, but sure you are using them in the same way as the background material. (For example, if you discuss "perspective", you should discuss the way the artist mapped the 3D world onto the 2D canvas, not the artist's point of view as shaped by their experiences.)

THIS IS IMPORTANT: The remaining blogs posts (#4 - #7) involve analyzing your selection by applying concepts from class. Each of your blog posts needs to be distinct: you can only use a concept once. If you discuss shadows in blog post #4, you cannot discuss them again in blog post #5. Although, I've recommended that you focus on concepts from weeks 2-4, that's only so you pace yourself. If you don't find that material compelling or if it doesn't seem to pertain to your works, then you are welcome to use any concept that we've discussed. Just remember that you cannot return to this concept in a subsequent blog. To summarize: you can use the same paintings in multiple blogs, but you cannot use the same concepts. The one exception: Some of you applied the course material in blog #3. I'm impressed that you did, and I certainly don't want to penalize you for having done so. In this one instance, you can reapply these concepts, but please write a new post. (You can reuse your ideas but not your exact words.)
