Black History Month: American Authors
Due: Sunday, February 28
Directions: Choose an author you find interesting that represents both Black History Month and American literature. Then complete project below. Read all the directions carefully. Fully complete all tasks to earn full credit (project grade). Effort counts! You may do ONE additional PPT for an extra credit. These should be neat, creative, and colorful.
· Intro slide (slide 1):
· Full name of your author
· A picture of your author
· Your name and class period
· Biography: Must be written in complete sentences.
· Slide 2:
· When/where the author was born
· Where the author lived (include dates)
· When/where/how the author died (if they are still living, provide their current status)
· Slide 3:
· Family
· Parents, siblings, children, etc
· Formative events or influential people in their lives
· What/who made an impact on them?
· What made them write?
· Media (Slide 4):
· What American literary time period they wrote in, and a brief description of how their work reflects that time period. Must be written in complete sentences.
· Remember: research is encouraged but CITE your sources!
· A listing of their written works (if they have several for a category, provide 4-5 of their most well-known works in that category. If they have no works in a particular category, don’t include it)
· Novels
· Plays
· Poems
· Speeches
· Essays (long or short form)
· Famous quotes from the author (Slide 5):
· Provide the context (year, place, event or written work) for the quote. Provide 3-5 quotes depending on length. (i.e, 5 shorter quotes, or 3 longer quotes)
· Slide 6:
· An explanation why you chose this author. Something important or valuable you learned while researching this author. Must be written in complete sentences—a full 6-8 sentence paragraph.
· Slide 7:
· Citations where you found your information. Must use a minimum of 3 different sources. Use Wikipedia to find other sources, but it cannot be a source itself. All sources must be put into MLA format. Use www.citationmachine.com or www.easybib.com for easy-to-follow guidance.
