REL/MUS 352
Mt. Calvary OR Omega Baptist Church Reflection Process
Due June 16, 2019
I. Before you attend the church, you should have already read How Music, Preaching and Prayer Shape Contemporary African American Worship and Ain’t Gwine Lay My ‘Ligion Down . They will serve as guides for your observations.
II. Attend either
a. Mt. Calvary Baptist Church [http://themtcalvarychurch.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mt-Calvary-Missionary-Baptist-Church/116403165053908] or
b. Omega Baptist Church [http://www.omegabaptist.org/omega/].
Visit the websites or Facebook page for precise information on times of worship. Both may also provide transportation if you do not have access to it. Call the church office to ask.
III. Take notes during the service. Try to find that delicate balance of being both a participant and observer. Try to observe with fresh eyes rather than go through the motion. Follow the required process for writing your final reflection.
IV. Collect material from the church: bulletin, order of service, photos of space etc. Be sure to include at least one photo of you at the church.
V. Critical: Draw multiple connections between material in the book and your own observations and experiences. CITE author, page and paragraph in your reflection. Ex. (McKinney, page 15, 3rd paragraph)
VI. Upload supporting documentation IN the reflection paper (programs, photos etc.) in ONE document. Make sure your name is ON the reflection paper AND in the file name!
NOTE: Arrive early to take photos. Do not do so during the worship service.
