Catalog Description: A contemporary course including applications of the scientific method, cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, classical and human genetics, virology and mechanisms of evolution.

Student Learning Outcomes: Identify the basic properties of substances needed for life. Describe the unity and diversity of life and the evidence for evolution through natural selection. Communicate effectively the results of scientific investigations. Describe the characteristics of life. Identify the principles of inheritance and solve classical genetic problems. Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving to make informed decisions in the laboratory. Apply scientific reasoning to investigate questions and utilize scientific tools such as microscopes and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze data. Explain the methods of inquiry used by scientists. Describe the structure of cell membranes and the movement of molecules across a membrane. Identify the substrates, products, and important chemical pathways in metabolism. Employ teamwork for a shared purpose or goal.Compare and contrast the structures, reproduction, and characteristics of viruses, prokaryotic cells, and eukaryotic cells. Identify the chemical structures, synthesis, and regulation of nucleic acids and proteins.

In our efforts to prepare students for a changing world, students may be expected to utilize computer technology while enrolled in classes, certificate, and/or degree programs within LSCS. The specific requirements are listed below:

Computer with webcam and reliable internet

access

Required Online Instructional Content: All lecture content and labs will be ONLINE. We will be using 2 online platforms for this course: D2L

(Lone Star College) and Connect (McGraw-Hill). You must have a stable, reliable internet connection to successfully access these platforms. These platforms can be accessed through Google Chrome or Firefox.

D2L: This learning platform is supplied by Lone Star College. Every student enrolled in courses at LSC should have access to their courses through this platform. In this course, you will utilize this platform to take exams (via Respondus LockDown Browser), take quizzes, and access study content.

CONNECT: This learning platform is supplied by McGraw-Hill. You must purchase an access code to access our course. An access code can be purchased with a textbook (see above details), without a textbook, or directly through the CONNECT website. In this course, you will use this platform for lecture/lab quizzes, activities, and homework. Instructor Guidelines and Policies

Exams/Assessments: Four lecture exams and one comprehensive final will be administered that account

for 65% of your overall grade (40% for lecture exams and 15% for the final exam). Your lowest Lecture Exam grade will be dropped at the end of semester. Exams will be multiple choice, true/false, matching, and/or essay. Exam material comes from content covered in the textbook, handouts, lecture presentations, quizzes and any additional readings, weblinks and videos that are given or assigned. All exams are administered through Respondus Lockdown Browser in D2L.

CONNECT Assignments and Assessments (Lecture and Lab): All quizzes and assignments are to be completed and submitted online on the scheduled due date through CONNECT. There will be no late submissions or makeup assignments. Your 2 lowest chapter assessment and chapter assignment grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. Your notes and textbook are allowed during homework assignments, but not during chapter assessments. Feel free to email your instructor with any questions or concerns about assignments and quizzes within 72 hours of completion date.

Attendance: Online participation is mandatory for your success in this course. You will need to access your online course materials every 1-3 days and complete all assigned activities. I will actively monitor your participation and progression. If you have missed 20% or more assignments, you will be sent e-mail via My LoneStar and Messages in your D2L course requesting a conference to discuss your online participation. No longer participating in this class does not constitute withdrawal from this course, nor does the student’s notification to the instructor that the student wishes to be dropped. It is the student’s responsibility to fill out a “schedule change form” at the registration desk to officially drop this class. Failure to do so may result in the grade of “F”.

Communication: It is imperative that you check your D2L Announcements and Official LoneStar e- mail on a regular basis to receive assignments, changes and communications from me. I may also be contacted through the Remind App @1406F21A (via direct messaging). Please allow 24-48 hours for me to respond to any messages or emails.

Late Work: Late work is not accepted. Any assignment not submitted by the due date will receive a 0 grade, unless prior arrangements are approved by the instructor.

Make-up Assessments: There will be NO MAKE-UP WORK or EXAMS. It is your responsibility to complete and submit all required assignments before the due date. After the due date, assignments will no longer be available for submission. Computer problems will not be accepted as an excuse for incomplete assignments. If you are experiencing computer problems, you will be expected to contact me immediately before the due date.

Cell Phones and Computers: Electronic devices are required in order to successfully complete this course.

Official Day of Record: Students that have not attended an in-class meeting or participated in an online class prior to the official day of record will be dropped from the course without exception. Official day of record for this course is 9/7/21.

Withdrawal Policy: No credit will be awarded for a course earning a “W.” If you stop attending class, you must withdraw at the registration office prior to “W” day, 10/6/21. If you stop attending class and do not officially withdraw, you will receive an “F” for the course.

Six Drop Rule: Students who enrolled in Texas public institutions of higher education as first-time college students during the Fall 2007 term or later are subject to section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, which states that an institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop (withdraw with a grade of “W”) from more than six courses, including courses that a transfer student has previously dropped at other Texas public institutions of higher education that have already been counted against their six drop limit. Each student should fully understand this drop limit before you drop any course. Please see a Counselor or Advisor in our Student Services area for additional information and assistance. This policy does not affect developmental or ESOL students.
