Osmosis Lab Report
Section D Dr. Carroll
Lab report title Group members (complete first and last names) Date of submission Section
Follow this format for abstracts.
Paragraph 1. Introduction to the topic - What is osmosis? Semi-permeable membranes +Membrane structure Paragraph 2. Introduction to the topic - What passes membranes? Why do cells utilize osmosis? What is tonicity? How does tonicity affect water movement? Paragraph 3. What is your research question and hypothesis?
Narrative format Include materials as you explain what you did. Explain how you dissolved the outer shell Note - each group member probably tested a different unknown - include all. Add formula for how you calculated the change in volume Include pictures of set up (one example is sufficient)
Make sure the order of the methods and results mirror each other.
What was the change in volume for the eggs?
Figures and Tables 1. Table - Changes in volume (average group members
for water, saline, and control) 2. Figure - picture of results (one is fine) 3. Bar Graph - Egg volume before and after for each
treatment
Remember: Table titles go on top and should be numbered.
Example
Figure captions go below the image/graph/figure and are number sequentially.
Do your results match your hypothesis? Why or Why not? You can also discuss any problems you encountered. Restating your results is not enough here, you must interpret your results. What do the data mean and what biological concepts to they demonstrate? What tonicity conditions were demonstrated? What is the solute concentration of an egg? What solutes might be found in an egg? How do your results fit into biology? You could take about why tonicity is important for plants, for animal cells, in hospital settings 2-3 paragraphs with in-text citations
4 sources Protocol is not a source All sources must be credible Must include 2 different peer-reviewed resources (at least one in intro and one in conclusion Section D: Due Nov 16
4 persons per group with different roles 1. Leader/Introduction
