Overview
BIO 211 CARDIOVASCULAR PROJECT
OBJECTIVE
Students will select a cardiovascular disorder from the list below to research and present to the class. Everyone will create an oral presentation for the class, including visual aids and will work in groups of 4-5 to present a total of 20-25 minutes for each group.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students should be able to apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to certain disease states of the cardiovascular system. Learn how to discuss diseases in terms of signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, and tests available to rule in or out diseases from the differential diagnosis. Furthermore, students should gain knowledge of risk factors, treatments available, and future prognosis. Again, you will work in groups and are expected to submit a group PowerPoint presentation corresponding to the five sections listed below in the introduction as well as and an individual written paper covering your individual contribution (topic) to the content.
INTRODUCTION
Imagine that you are in the clinic and a patient approaches you with the disorder you have chosen below. You don’t know yet that they have this particular disorder, but your job is to help this patient.
Use the following as a guideline to assessing the patient:
1) Signs and Symptoms
a. Symptoms are what the patient describes to you. Among these will be a Chief Complaint. Usually, the one thing that causes them to seek help.
b. Signs are what a health care professional would observe when examining the patient.
c. Appropriate anatomical terminology should be used.
2) Differential diagnosis
a. Using the signs and symptoms described above list and briefly describe 5 other diseases the patient might have based on these findings. I.e., If a patient came in with a chief complaint of lower right quadrant abdominal pain you may develop a differential diagnosis of, appendicitis, bowel obstruction, gas, ovarian cyst, abdominal muscle injury.
3) Tests
a. Which tests are usually ordered for your disease?
b. How do these tests rule in or rule out your differential diagnosis list?
4) Treatments (and risk factors)
a. List common treatments. These could include medicines, surgery, or lifestyle change.
b. Since treatments often correct underlying risk factors, describe the common risk factors for developing your disease.
5) Prognosis
a. How well do patients recover?
These are all questions you will answer by researching the disorder you select. For this project, you will know the end result, but what if you didn’t? Your goal is to help the class understand the process you would go through in a clinical setting.
SELECTED TOPICS

RECOMMENDED RESOURCES
Please refer to your Library Guide (LibGuide) for this project.
Your project should have at least 3 references.
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
· 20-25 minutes oral presentation (total for the group, each member should present ~5 minutes).
· Include visual aids (PowerPoint, etc.).
· Number of slides should be around 20, although this may be more or less to fit the time frame for the presentation. Quality, not quantity, is important.
· Slides should include pictures and text. Paragraphs of text are not to be used. Only bullet point main ideas.
· Reference slide at the end must be included and cited according to APA.
· The slides must be submitted via Dropbox on D2L by July 1st . Only one submission per group.
· Topics to include:
· Signs and symptoms of the condition (use appropriate anatomical terminology). What information is collected during intake?
· Differential diagnosis.
· Which tests are run, what results are expected (give numerical values when appropriate), how are other disorders eliminated?
· Treatment protocol. What options are given to the patient?
· Describe the risk factors associated with this disease and how treatments correct these risk factors.
· Prognosis. What is the expected outcome?
GRADING
Total points possible = 100
Group 50% Based on PowerPoint.
Individual 50% Based on oral presentation and evaluation from teammates as well as written word document covering individual presentation content.
All students are expected to fully participate in this project, this is a team effort. If a student does not participate in the oral presentation, they will receive a “0” for the entire project. Each teammate is responsible for all parts of this assignment. Your group should divide up the work, but if one person drops this class the group is still expected to complete all parts of the assignment.

BREAKDOWN OF PRESENTATION GRADES:
· 10% student evaluation (see below)
· 30% professor evaluation (see rubric)
Instructions: This is where I would like you to rate yourself and your other group members.
1. When preparing the presentation did you feel the work was divided evenly?
Not at All Somewhat Very Much So
2. Estimate how much time you yourself put into the project (be honest):______________
3. Did your group meet as an entire group anytime outside of class?
4. List each group member (including yourself)and provide a brief description of their contribution
