Rationale forcourse: The Mississippi College Mission Statement stipulates that

Mississippi College stimulates the intellectual development of its students through the . .

sciences. A prequisite to the preceding is an understanding of the interaction between

man and his body. Thus, an understanding of the human body by the student will

hopefully contribute to living a balanced satisfying and meaningful life. This is

important to a person whenever he or she takes a trip to a supermarket, the pharmacy,

the doctor’s office, etc. By understanding the proper nutrition, the student can make

choices for their health. By understanding the body, the student can help to make health

choices when seeing the doctor. This course covers what the student ought to know to

live as an informed citizen in the twenty-first century. It is hopeful that students who

complete this course will ultimately utilize their skills, talents and abilities in a service to

God and man as well as develop in the student a love of learning about the human body

that will continue throughout their lifetime.

Learning objectives:

2. The student will learn the virtual use of the microscope and the parts.

3.The student will learn the concepts of the chemistry of life.

4. The student will describe and list the functions of the cell.

5.The student will distinguish between the different basic types of tissues in the

human body.

6.The student will be describe the structure and function of the following Human

systems: Integumentary , Circulatory, Lymphatic, Digestive, Respiratory, Urinary,

Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, and Reproductive

7. The student will learn the role that modern nations play in assisting third world

countries in their need for food and clean water.

Learning outcomes: The student will be able to :

1. State the scientific method and give examples 2. Identify the parts of the microscope and explain the use. 3. Explain the concepts of the chemistry of life. 4. Identify the parts of the cell and list their function. 5. Identify the different basic types of tissues in the human body. 6. The student will discuss the function of each of the Human systems and identify the

organs of each system.

7. The student will be able to relate the marvels of the human body in caring for our health and the health of each other.

Required Practices:

1. There will be 2 unit test that are 100 points each. 2. You will have online assignments to complete equal to a total of 100points . 3. Students are expected to login at least twice a week to the course site.

Instructional Materials : Exercises in lab book, Assignments in Moodle, online virtual

labs, discussion forums. .

Evaluation Methods:

2 lab tests 100 pts each 200 points

Assignment(two types) total 100 pts 100 points

Assignment answers submitted- 75 pts

Discussion forum -25pts

Each discussion is 5 points each. Those points include the original post and

the post to another student’s response.(See the rubric under the first discussion)

Accommodations statement –

Special accommodations at Student Counseling Services:

In order for a student to receive disability accommodations under Section 504 of the

Americans with Disabilities Act, he or she must schedule an individual meeting with the

Director of Student Counseling Services immediately upon recognition of their disability

(if their disability is known they must come in before the semester begins or make an

appointment immediately upon receipt of their syllabi for the new semester). The student

must bring with them written documentation from a medical physician and/or licensed

clinician that verifies their disability. If the student has received prior accommodations,

they must bring written documentation of those accommodations (example

Individualized Education Plan from the school system). Documentation must be current

(within 3 years). The student must meet with SCS face-to face and also attend two (2)

additional follow up meetings (one mid semester before or after midterm examinations

and the last one at the end of the semester). Please note that the student may also schedule

additional meetings as needed for support through SCS as they work with their professor

throughout the semester. Note: Students must come in each semester to complete their

Individualized Accommodation Plan (example: MC student completes fall semester IAP

plan and even if student is a continuing student for the spring semester they must come in

again to complete their spring semester IAP plan).

Grading scale: 90-100= A

80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D 0-59 =F

Attendance- The student must sign in once a week into the course in Moodle. If a

student misses more than one week they will be dropped with a grade of F.

Make up policy: A student must present by email a valid excuse for missing an online

test. Because the test can be taken over several days the student should adjust their

schedule ahead of time to meet the deadlines.

Early Alert System

Mississippi College has adopted the practice of finding students early in the semester

who may be exhibiting behaviors that could ultimately have a negative impact on their

academic progress. These behaviors are often called “red flag” behaviors and include,

but are not limited to, excessive absences, poor test grades, and lack of class participation

or evidence of non-engagement. Identifying these behaviors early gives the instructor the

opportunity to raise the “red flag” on behalf of a particular student so that the student can

take the appropriate action to redirect his/her progress. The system alerts the student, the

student’s advisor, and the Office of Student Success.

These messages are intended to help a student recognize an area of concern and to

encourage him/her to make some choices to improve the situation. When a student

receives an Early Alert message, the student should quickly make an appointment to talk

with his/her professor about the situation. Also, students can make full use of the Office

of Student Success to set academic goals and connect to campus resources.

The instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus as well as the course schedule in

order to meet the needs of the class. If this takes place the students will be notified of

any changes.
