Instructions
1. Complete the Report by completing the 4 sections below.
2. The Background and Materials sections can be completed ahead of time. The Results should be completed as you perform the experiment, except for the graphing part. The Discussion should be completed when you are done with the experiment.
3. Use your own words. This way, you will avoid plagiarism issues. You will also have to understand the material well enough to put it in your own words.
4. When the Report is complete, upload it to Brightspace using the link under Week 2.
5. Please note that reports that do not contain all three required pictures will receive a grade of zero.
Section 1: Background
20 points; 200 words minimum. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
1 - Discuss what is known about water, the water cycle, and the effect of salinity on plants. You could include: a description of the water cycle, whether water is getting more or less salty and why; how plants use water to transport nutrients; the importance of water in seed germination; what is known about the effects of salinity on plants; the importance to humans of understanding the effects of salinity; or anything else of personal interest to you (for example, has the availability of produce from a Farmer’s Market near you been impacted by salinity)
3- At the end of the background, propose a hypothesis for each experiment.
A - In Experiment 1, what do you predict will be the effect of salt on water transport in celery? Be specific. Do you think the dye will move further in the celery in the low salt or high salt? Why?
B - In Experiment 2, what do you predict will be the effect of salt on seed germination? Be specific. Do you think more seeds will germinate in the water and low salt conditions, or in the high salt conditions? Why?
Section 2: Materials and Methods
25 points. 200 words minimum, 500 words maximum. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.

1 – Identify the key materials you used. Include, for example: the celery (did it have leaves?), the dye brands, the salt brand, or anything else that might have affected the results.

Experiment 1
1 – Record the start and stop times of your experiment in Table 1 below.

2 – After you have removed your celery from the cups and laid them down on paper towels, record your observations. Is the dye visible in the leaves? How does each stalk feel, firm or limp? How does each stalk look, firm or shriveled?
3 – Insert a picture of your end results. Make sure it includes the ID card.

1 – Insert at least one picture of your end results. Make sure it shows any seeds that have sprouted. Make includes the ID card. Also identify the percent salt the seeds were in.

Analyze your results: what effects did salt have on water transport in celery and seed germination? Please include answers to the following questions in your discussion.
· What was the effect of salinity on water transport in celery? Please reference your results.
· What was the effect of salinity on seed germination? Please reference your results.
· If your results are unexpected or difficult to explain (for example, all the seeds germinated), propose an explanation.
· Did anything unexpected or odd happen? Provide a possible explanation.
· Did your results support the hypotheses you proposed at the end of the Background section? Clearly explain why or why not.
· What is the importance of your results to people today?
