Disproportionate number of maternal and postpartum morbidity in the U. S. occur to women of color with recent causes due to the COVID – 19 pandemic. Many women were left without coverage during their crucial postpartum period. In 2020 alone, there were greater than 850 maternal deaths in the U.S. related to severe maternal morbidity (SMM) (Manatt Health, 2020).
According to Urban Institute Black and Indigenous women have 2 – 3 times higher changes of suffering from poor maternal and infant health outcome than White women.

Severe maternal morbidity (SMM)
Most cases start after leaving the hospital, anywhere from 1 week to 1 year after discharge.
Prevalence of 1 in 7 women for those with commercial insurance & 1 in 6 women for those with Medicaid
Prevalence of SMM is 1.7 times higher in Black women than White.
What can we do?
Providing continuation of care
DCD says we need to focus the care to after discharge
Longer follow up care beyond 6 weeks postpartum care
Meet them in the community
Places or worship
Grocery stores
Libraries
Day care centers
Mobile health care
