PURPOSE:The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy and credibility of information found in a popular article on some aspect of oceanography. You must have the article approved by the instructor prior to proceeding with your research. Your job is to investigate the topic discussed in the article and present evidence from reputable scientific sources that determine if the claims made in the article are true. I suggest you search the UW Libraries Catalog for books on your subject and the UW library database Aquatic Science Collection for scientific research articles. You should combine the knowledge you’ve gained from this course with information you’ve obtained from outside research to do your evaluation. Make sure to thoroughly document your discussion with citations from reputable scientific sources. PAPER LOGISTICS: Length: The paper should be a minimum of 5 pages with a maximum of 10 typed pages long (double spaced in a standard font size). ‘Quality not quantity’ is the issue here. This page length refers only to the text part of your paper and does not include figures, tables or reference pages. References: A minimum of 5 references from peer-reviewed scientific journals or books should be used to provide evidence and support for your discussion. Additional references, including reputable webpage sources, may be used as supplemental supporting evidence. Use the Modified CSE scientific citation format when citing outside references in the text and putting together a bibliography. See the UWT library webpage for details on this citation method. http://guides.lib.uw.edu/ld.php?content_id=14048491Format: The overall format should be clear, organized, well structured and documented, so that the reader can follow your logic and understand your point of view. Please check your spelling and grammar. Presentation and content both count. Plagiarism will not be tolerated!

Annotated Bibliography

You will create an annotated bibliography using the modified CSE citation format given on the course website and the UWT library webpage to get you started on your research paper. This bibliography will contain a variety of sources that focus on the subject of your paper so that you can use these sources when writing your paper.

List your sources in alphabetical order.

What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography is simply a bibliography that includes a summary of the contents of each of your sources. For example:

Secord D, Kareiva P. 1996. Perils and pitfalls in the host specificity paradigm. BioScience 46: 448-53.

This primary scientific article by Secord and Kareiva discusses some of the biological and public policy problems associated with the concept of host specificity applied to biological control of pest organisms. The authors cite many examples of the evolution of host shifts in basic and applied systems, and warn against blanket acceptance of specificity testing as a solution to ecologically damaging host shifts by species in various taxa. They recommend some possible solutions, including consideration of chemical ecology of insect herbivores, genetic diversity of interacting species, and greater use of augmentation with native control organisms.
