Title

Privacy issues in smart home devices using internet of things- A survey

Year

2018

Journal

International Journal of Advanced Research, 6(10), 566-568.doi 10.21474/IJAR01/7839

Summary

Usha and Bobby (2018 ,p.566) explain that this paper “presents a survey on the privacy issues directed towards smart home devices using internet of things”. These privacy issues arise from the fact that “the application of security in internet of things has been identified as one of the top hurdles for realizing the vision of smart energy-efficient homes” This is due to the nature of smart homes as smart home appliances are connected to the internet and the information available on the appliances is prone to attack by hackers.

What was the problem that they were trying to address?

The main problem that Usha and Bobby (2018, 567) were trying to address was the resolution of privacy issues in smart home devices using internet of things where appliances were prone to attack by hackers.

How did they address the problem?

Usha and Bobby (2018, p. 567) argue that data encryption of the firmware of the IoT network is extremely necessary for maintaining the privacy of the data that is shared over the internet.

What theories, if any, were used?

In this paper , Usha and Bobby (2018, p. 567) adopt a holistic framework, as opposed to a theory, which “incorporates different components from IoT architectures/frameworks in order to efficiently integrate smart home objects in a cloud-centric IoT based solution”

What were their findings?

Usha and Bobby (2018) opine that “the holistic approach ascertained in the paper can be used as a solid base for the future development of Internet of Things based smart home solutions”

What future research was discussed?

Usha and Bobby (2018, p. 568) contend that conventional devices and appliances will get smarter and modern technology will change our lifestyle. Security and privacy at the device level, protecting the user and encrypting communication links is therefore critical to the secure operation of IoT in smart home devices.

IoT based smart home: Security challenges, security requirements and solutions

Year

2017

Journal

2017 23rd International Conference on Automation and Computing (ICAC), 527-533. doi:10.23919/iconac.2017.8082057

Summary

Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 527) explain that the paper investigates security attacks in smart homes and evaluates their impact on the overall system security. Further, this paper identifies security requirements and solutions in the smart home environment. Lastly, this paper suggest the setting of security goals for the smart home environment

What was the problem that they were trying to address?

The main problem that Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 527) were trying to address is security issues in a smart home environment with relation to their impact on the overall system security and a well-structured network

How did they address the problem?

Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 530) argue that the identification of security requirements and solutions in the smart home environment is key to ensuring the integration of smart home systems into a well -structured network.

What theories, if any, were used?

Rather than the use of a theory, Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 528) investigate security attacks in smart homes and evaluate their impact on the overall system security.

What were their findings?

The authors , Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 529) , opine that the main security objectives that a smart home environment must fulfill are Confidentiality, Integrity, Authentication, Authorization, Non-repudiation and Availability.

What future research was discussed?

Based on historical data, Ali, Dustgeer, Awais and Shah (2017, p. 532) forecast and discuss security attacks (like malware, virus etc.) and estimate how many attacks are expected to be launched in coming years.
