Overview of the Theological Reports
Students will complete two Theological Reports which will synthesize themes and categories of Paul’s theology in light of the scope of the Pauline corpus to interpret individual passages from Paul’s letters. In each Theological Report, the student will compose responses within a provided template adding up to at least 1,000 words ( excluding footnotes and bibliography). At least two peer-reviewed sources other than this course’s textbook should be consulted in each report.
Theological Report 2: The Consummation of the New Realm
In preparation for the assignment below, read Chapter 22 in Douglas J. Moo’s A Theology of Paul and His Letters. Pay special attention to the way Moo structures Chapter 19. Cite at least two peer-reviewed resources in addition to citing Moo’s text where appropriate. Follow Turabian style throughout, including the formatting of biblical references, footnotes, and bibliography.
To complete this Exegetical Report, use this document as your template.
1. Explain how 1 Cor 15:20–28 reveal the “already”/“not yet” tension that characterizes Pauline (and New Testament) Theology (50 words).
2. In light of Moo’s explanation of Paul’s use of “the Day of the Lord” and its variations (pp. 534–37), describe how this phrase is rooted in the Old Testament (200 words).
3. Paul uses the word parousia (“coming”) thirteen times throughout his letters. Provide a general explanation of the meaning and uses of this term, and a specific explanation of how this word contributes to Paul’s theology on the Second Coming of Christ. Be sure to cite references to Paul’s letters that support your descriptions (200 words).
4. Identify the texts in the Pauline corpus that address the matter of resurrected bodies in the context of the Parousia. On what theological grounds does Paul present his theology of the resurrection of the body? (200 words).
5. The Day of the Lord is presented as an event that involves both salvation and judgment. Two theological views that have emerged in response to Paul’s letters about this event are annihilationism and universalism. For this question, first provide a brief description of annihilationism as an interpretation of Paul’s teaching on eternal destruction, followed by an account of the major objections of this view. Second, provide a brief description of universalism, followed by an explanation of this view’s major problems. Follow Moo’s presentation of these issues for guidance (pp. 545–54) (300 words).
6. Based on Moo’s description of the judgment of believers on the Day of the Lord (pp. 554–57), provide a brief application for today that considers Paul’s communicative purpose to “comfort the afflicted,” on the one hand, and “afflict the comfortable” on the other. (50 words).
