HSL 4850: Best Practice Papers

Guidelines

For this assignment, students will select and focus on one of the following chapters in the

textbook: Ch. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, or 19. You will write three Best Practice Papers in

this course and should select a different chapter for each paper.

The goal of this assignment is to provide students an opportunity to learn more about the

population covered by the selected chapter and to assist students in using the literature to identify

evidenced-based techniques and strategies for working with a specific population. Your paper

should be written in APA format with each of the following sections included & clearly

identified using headings.

Part 1: Chapter Summary

Each of these chapters includes pertinent information about the identified population as well as

an interview with an individual from that population. Read your selected chapter and write a

brief summary of the information presented including the demographics and relevant family and

cultural information provided. Be sure to put this information in your own words and cite your

text as appropriate in APA format. This section will be about 2 paragraphs.

Part 2: Interviewee Profile

Identify and briefly describe the life experience of the interviewee from the chapter. Discuss

what you learned about this person and their life. This section will be 1-2 paragraphs.

Part 3: Consult the Literature

After reading the chapter, the student should locate two peer-reviewed, empirical journal

articles from within the last 10 years that describes some aspect of human services work (e.g.,

case management, therapy, counseling, providing assistance, connecting to services) with the

identified population. Please make sure these are from the human services and/or social work

literature and address actually working with the population (e.g., best practice vs. a literature

review). These should be from scholarly journal articles, not websites or books. Please note: you

will likely need to read/review more than two articles before finding the articles you want to

include for this assignment. Do not cite more than two articles on your reference page.

Include the full APA citation of each article and below each citation include a brief (100-

200 word) summary of the key points of the article. This should not be from the article

abstract; put the findings in your own words.

After you have summarized both articles, write a brief 100-200 word paragraph reflecting on

what you learned about this population from the literature under the heading, Summary.

Grading Rubric

Assignment requirements (5 points)

The assignment meets word limits, is double-spaced, uses 12 point Times New Roman font

throughout, has 1” margins, and each section is clearly labeled with an appropriate heading. No

points will be earned if all of these criteria are not present.

Writing, Spelling, Grammar (5 points)

The paper has correct spelling and grammar with no/few mistakes and is well-written.

Chapter Summary (10 points)

This section is included and provides a concise summary of the demographics and relevant

family and cultural information on the selected population. The information in the student’s own

words and cites the text as appropriate in APA format.

Interviewee Profile (10 points)

This section is included a brief description of the life experiences of the interviewee from the

selected chapter. The student reflects on this information.

Consult the Literature (10 points)

This section includes the full APA citation of two peer-reviewed, empirical journal articles from

within the last 10 years and a brief summary of each article. The summaries are in the student’s

own words and not taken from the article abstract. The journals are scholarly human services or

social work journals. This section also includes a brief summary paragraph reflecting on the

student’s learning about this population.
