Where does time disappear?

Last Wednesday, we had our guest speaker William Espy to share his life journey, path, and reflection to our class. He said that he was an ECON major at college, but he was interested in his art and history class. After he graduated, he didn’t know what job to do. He had no clues about what he wanted to do. Then he went to Europe to seek a job. After he encountered his girlfriend and married eventually in Europe. Then his salary was not able to afford his family’s expenses. Thus, he realized that he had to come back to the United States to earn enough money to sustain their life. After he went back to the United States, he got an advertising job from his friend’s recommendation. The value I learned from him was determination: he is willing to change at different stages. As a result, I consider myself should get more information about the things I’m going to do before I do it physically. Once I know things better, I will have more courage and passion to do the things that I’m going to encounter. For example, before I went here to study abroad, I should travel here once with my parents. Then I will know the surrounding construction of DU better, I might rent an apartment next to DU instead of living on the campus to reduce the living expenses.

According to my life experience, I had different goals at different stages of my life. I was born in Taiwan and grew up in Shanghai city. Due to my father’s job, my parents brought me and two sisters to Shanghai city when I was 6 years old. Since I was in primary school, my father began to ask me what kind of job I want to have in the future. That was impossible for me to have a clear conclusion of what I want to do at that time. The only thing I knew was I want to earn millions of money and eat all kinds of delicious food in the world. My father’s salary could afford my family’s living expenses at that time. The reason for me have the idea of earning tons of money is due to my ambition. I had the mind of earning tons of money to prove to others that I’m successful. Although I know it is not the only way to prove I’m successful in the future, but that was what I was thinking when I was young. In this case, I consider I had the ambition of being a success no matter how young I was.

The first time I changed my mind was 10 years later, I realized that I shouldn’t always believe money is the priority. After I graduated from my Junior high school, my Math teaches at my Junior high school reminded me that a person’s education, logic, and values could be important as well. Education means a person’s essential knowledge like Math, writing skills, and speech skills. Logic means how a person utilizes his or her function to solve a problem. Value means a person’s good manner such as polite, honest, and patient. He was the first teacher to discuss my plan. Once I told him my original idea, he told me that:“ Of course, you can make tons of money and purchase almost anything you want; however, before that, you should have a good manner, enough knowledge, and good logic to approach the goal. Roma was not built in one day. You cannot get success by just taking one step. You are a student now and you should study for the future. If you want to do a job associate with business, I will have to learn essential Math and finance about Business; otherwise, you cannot run your business successfully. You should have the correct logic to deal with the problem; otherwise, you cannot deal with the problem when your company encountered an emergency. You should respect others, otherwise, people won’t want to do business with you.”

After this conversation, I had the reflection that I should separate my goal into small pieces and then deal with them step by step. I chose to study more from my father about how he deals with business. When he called with his co-workers and supervisor, I observed how he reacted to different circumstances. When he negotiated with his business partner, I learned what kind of strategy he used to discuss with them. Besides that, my father indoctrinates me to be humble. He said no matter at school or in the future I have a job. I should always be humble and learn the good values of other people. It sounds easy, but it is hard to accomplish. Sometimes, I’m not good at finding others’ traits. He asked me to talk more with others, trying to find the common traits of the people. Trying to figure out when they can accomplish something in their fields.

Overall, I have learned that I should do things from the small goals. Although the ambition let me sometimes ignore the importance of a small goal, I should have a plan of the process. For example, I decided to be an account after graduate school. I’m planning to get a 3.5 GPA in college than study at the graduate school at DU eventually. Since I have to study at graduate school without any gap quarters. I will take the internship next summer to fulfill myself. I believe the internship can help me learn more about my major. Furthermore, if I can graduate successfully from graduate school in 1.5 years, I’m going to find a finance or account job to earn money to afford. During I’m having a job, I will improve my accounting skills, so that I will be more likely to get my CPA certification in the next 2 years. These are my goals in the next 5 years. When I’m getting elder around 45 years old, I might try to get a teaching certificate to teach Junior school. The reason for me to do that when I’m elder is a teacher’s salary is not very good, but I believe that a teacher plays an essential role in developing students’ thinking. I would like to help more kids have better logic and personal values to deal with the future problem in their life.
