Bem’s An Unconventional Family – Paper Guidelines – PSY 321 DUE: Monday, 11/20/17 (post to Canvas by the beginning of class time) Read these guidelines carefully, and let me know if you have any questions about this assignment. General Information

• You will write a paper on An Unconventional Family by Sandra Bem, which is worth 50 points. • This paper should be typed and 5-7 double-spaced pages in length. Pay careful attention to the

mechanics, clarity, and logic of your writing and to the flow and organization of your paper, including both introductory and concluding sections.

• This assignment will give you practice connecting the course material to an external source before you do this in your film analysis project. After you submit your paper, we will discuss the book in class to give you an opportunity to share your analysis with the class and benefit from hearing how others analyzed the book.

• You should upload your paper to the Bem Paper assignment link in Canvas by the beginning of class time on 11/20. Note that I have posted additional links and information in this folder on gender-role socialization and avoiding plagiarism. In particular, I have posted a “thought-experiment” article by Lois Gould (1978) called “X: A Fabulous Child’s Story.” This article raises interesting questions on gender- role socialization – check it out!

• You are required to run your Bem paper through Turnitin.com prior to submitting it to me for grading. To access our course site in Turnitin.com, you will need the Class ID (15986986) and enrollment password/key (fall2017), which is case-sensitive.

Content How you organize your Bem paper is up to you, but it should include the following content:

• Your overall evaluation of the book, including a description of its strengths and weaknesses. • A description of the THREE ideas or events in the book that you found most interesting or important.

o It is best to paraphrase here, but be sure to use quotation marks if you are including exact wording from the book.

o Specify the page numbers in the Bem book where each of the important ideas/events you include in your paper can be found.

• A description of how each of these three ideas or events can be connected to material outside the Bem book (external connections). Follow these rules in making your external connections:

o Make one distinct connection per interesting point that you describe from the Bem book. Be specific in these connections and address directly how they relate to material in the Bem book.

o At least two of your external connections must be to specific theories, concepts, or research findings presented in the Helgeson textbook or the Canvas DQ articles. Note, however, that all three of your external connections may be to material from the textbook or Canvas articles. Be sure to specify the page numbers in the Helgeson text/ Canvas articles where each of the concepts for your external connections can be found.

o One of your external connections may be to specific material that is external to this course (i.e., material from another course, a current news event or a real-world event, an article or book you have read, a film you have seen, etc.). Note that your external connections in this category may NOT be to personal experiences.

• Your reflection on and description of what you think are the pros and cons of nontraditional gender socialization (i.e., socializing boys and girls in a nontraditional manner in terms of gender-related traits, roles, interests, etc.).

o Describe at least TWO pros and at least TWO cons. o Indicate whether you think the pros outweigh the cons (or vice versa) AND explain your

response. o Be sure to use information and examples from Bem’s book (with corresponding page

numbers) to support your points throughout this part of your paper.
