There are 8 questions. Answer TWO questions.

All questions are worth equal marks.

Q 1

Q1 Part 1 (50 marks)

We discussed the Product Life Cycle in the module and noted that within the same industry some

new launches turn out to be fads, others are classified as fashions and then there are real new

products.

Choose one industry and describe new launches which were in each of the three categories.

Take each of the three in turn and explain the reasons for their success and/or failure.

Q1 Part 2 (50 marks)

Explain the problems associated with using the Product Life Cycle to allocate marketing resources.

Give examples where possible to illustrate these problems.

_____

Q2 (100 marks)

Please describe how participating in this module (BEM3041 Marketing Management and Strategy)

has changed your views about, and understanding of, marketing. Provide examples of these changes

and illustrate how they would affect the way you would approach a first job in marketing.

_____

Q3 (100 marks)

Describe the process of market research.

Using either the Smooth as Silk Case we discussed in class, or an example of your own choice, show

how the process can be applied in practice and also evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the

market research process in the example you cite.

Q4 (100 marks)

Research has shown that people’s attitudes are poor predictors of their subsequent behaviour.

Given that most market research conducted asks about individuals’ attitudes it could be argued that

much market research expenditure is wasted.

Present an argument either for or against the proposition that much market research is a waste of

time and resources.

_____

Q5

The table below shows the key brands of Pasta Sauce, derived from a panel of 2287 households in a

with the total number of purchases of the brand. The third column shows the total number of

purchases of any pasta sauce made by the customers of each brand. So for example:
