· Instructions: In this exercise, you will observe a specific location of your choosing. Simply sit and observe for 15-20 minutes. Record notes as you go along. Pay attention to what you see and hear. Do not attempt to analyze anything. Just write what you can perceive with your senses. Do not use anyone’s name or provide other identifying information. When you are finished, write a paper addressing the following questions:
1. What specific location did you observe? Describe the time, place and date of your observation. Write a detailed description of what you saw, heard, and smelled. Avoid drawing conclusions. Just write the description. This will be the longest section of your paper.
2. Write two paragraphs about 1) cultural patterns and 2) sociological themes you observed. Did anything noteworthy happened that deserves some reflection? You can be analytical here. Use correct terminology and use your book as a reference.
3. Write a concluding paragraph with your final remarks about the experience.
