In The News Assignment

The In the News Assignment has been designed to give you the opportunity to review current news articles about one of the Healthy People assigned focus areas addressed by the Healthy People 2020 program's Vision, Mission, Overarching Goals: https://www.healthypeople.gov/sites/default/files/HP2020Framework.pdf.

In the first few days of Week 1, your Instructor will assign one of the following Healthy People focus areas based on last names. Access your focus area on the Healthy People 2020 website and choose one or more subtopics to focus on. https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives

Mental Health and Mental Disorders

To prepare for this Assignment, look for an article in an online news publication that relates to your Healthy People assigned focus area. The news article should be intended for the general public and not come from an academic journal. Examples of such sources follow:

Magazines and newspapers (e.g., The New York Times)

Health news websites (e.g., National Public Radio's (NPR's) "Health" section)

News updates from government sites, such as "In the News" at the National Institutes of Health site (http://www.nih.gov/, upper right-hand corner of home page) or "Science News" at the National Institute of Mental Health http://www.nimh.nih.gov/science-news/index.shtml

The Assignment:

Part 1: Summary of the article

· Summarize your article in approximately 150–200 words.

Include current statistics pertaining to your Healthy People focus area.

Part 2: Response to the article

· Include a 600- to 700-word comprehensive response to the article.

· Explain how the article pertains to your Healthy People focus area.

· Explain whether the article addresses a biomedical perspective, a prevention perspective, or both.

· Explain which levels (or level) of the Social Ecological Model are addressed in the topic.

· Explain which sections of the “Unnatural Causes” series could apply to this focus area.

Note: Post BOTH parts of your Assignment to the In the News Discussion Board thread by Day 4.

Be sure to provide a hyperlink to the article that informed your response (if applicable) and cite and reference it appropriately, using APA, in your response. If you need help with APA format for citing and referencing electronic sources and articles.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two colleagues in the following ways:

· Provide additional statistics pertaining to their Healthy People focus area.

· Explain how the article pertains to your Healthy People focus area.

· Provide an example of how the article addresses a biomedical perspective, a prevention perspective, or both.

· Identify and explain an additional section of the “Unnatural Causes” series that could apply to your colleague’s focus area.

Return to the Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues' comments.
