BEER IN THE NETHERLANDS

HEADLINES ▪ Beer sees a healthy total volume increase of 3% in 2018, to reach 1.2 billion litres

▪ Strong interest is seen in lower ABV beers, as consumers want healthier options

▪ Low alcohol beer generates the highest total volume growth in 2018

▪ The growing importance of beer other than lager drives growth in the average unit price in

current terms

▪ Heineken remains the leader in beer in 2018, with a total volume share of 40%

▪ Beer is expected to see a total volume CAGR of 2% in the forecast period, to reach 1.3 billion

litres in 2023

PROSPECTS

A Further Switch To Low Alcohol and Non-alcoholic Beer

Heineken 0.0 was a breakthrough in non-alcoholic beer, and this launch also set the standard

for other brewers. Consumers are increasingly interested in products which help them to

achieve more moderate alcohol consumption, and brewers responded by developing new low

alcohol and non-alcoholic beers. The fact that major players such as Heineken, Interbrew

Nederland and Swinkels Family Brewers not only developed new low alcohol and non-alcoholic

lagers, but also low alcohol and non-alcoholic dark beers, underlines the fact that the category is

changing rapidly. Some players launched low alcohol session IPA beers, as these beers deliver

both in terms of flavour and lower alcohol. Swinkels Family Brewers was even bolder, and also

launched a non-alcoholic version of its well-known amber beer Palm. If these new types of low

alcohol and non-alcoholic beers prove to be successful, and the expectation is that they will be,

this will no doubt lead to many more new launches within the next two or three years.

No Potential for Volume Growth in Lager, But Unit Prices Might See Modest Recovery

The outlook for the total volume development of lager is negative. Young adult consumers in

particular are changing their attitude towards alcohol in general, and this is having a negative

impact on lager. These new consumers see lager as a relatively generic product compared with,

for instance, dark beer or cocktails. These consumers are also interested in restricting their

alcohol intake, and this means that binge drinking lager is becoming less common. Despite the

minor decline in total volume sales expected in the forecast period, it is likely that the average

unit price will see a minor improvement. A major reason for this is that from 2019 onwards, there

will be a ban on extreme price promotions for lager. As the promotional pressure within lager is

extremely high, it is likely that this new legislation will have a positive effect on price

development, although the price competition will remain high. A second reason is the growing

interest in more premium lager. The beer culture in the Netherlands is changing, and there is

more emphasis on quality. Because of the success of craft beer, the average consumer is more

sophisticated when it comes to the taste of beer. This trend will have a further positive effect on

the development of premium lager.

Craft Beer Is Likely To Reach Saturation

The interest in craft beer is still increasing, as consumers are willing to pay for more

interesting and local beers. Consumers are looking for new experiences and want to discover

new flavours. The number of craft brewers saw explosive growth in recent years. However,

there are signs that the number of breweries is close to saturation. The craft brewers

association, for instance, reports that some of the larger craft breweries are still recording

double-digit growth, but some smaller members are seeing only minor growth, or even sales

declines. These are signs that the number of craft brewers in the Netherlands is likely to see

slower growth, and there may even be a shake-out over the forecast period, as only the more

professional craft brewers will be able to achieve long-term success.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Success in Non-alcoholic Beer Helps Heineken Achieve Growth

Heineken is the largest beer brewer, as it owns major brands such as Heineken and Amstel.

The company managed to further expand its sales of beer in 2018. The main reason for this

positive performance was the continued success of Heineken 0.0 in non-alcoholic beer. This

beer was a breakthrough for the category, and it continued to grow in its second year. Following

the success of Heineken 0.0, other brewers responded by launching their own non-alcoholic

beer ranges; however, Heineken continued to lead the way in this high growth category. The

dramatic increase in sales of non-alcoholic beer helped to offset the loss of volumes in flavoured

beer.

Interbrew Nederland Is Strong in Dark Beer

In lager, the position of Interbrew Nederland is under pressure, as the Jupiler brand had

difficulties maintaining its volume share. In lager, an extremely large volume is sold at a reduced

price, and with this high promotional pressure it is difficult to maintain share. However, the

company led dark beer in 2018. Thanks to the popularity of traditional brands such as the Dutch

brand Hertog Jan and Belgian brands such as Hoegaarden and Leffe, Interbrew Nederland has

a strong position in dark beer. As dark beer is showing strong growth, its dark beer brands are

making a positive contribution to its performance.

Craft Beer Brewers Continue To Thrive

Besides craft breweries gaining national distribution, many retailers now also offer craft beer

from local brewers. Craft beer is expected to see further growth, as consumers remain

interested in high-quality speciality beer. Whilst consumption is expected to see a further

increase, the growth in the number of new craft brewers is likely to slow down considerably.

Hundreds of new brewers started in recent years, and the potential for further strong growth is

limited. Every major city and town has at least one craft brewery, and this means that craft beer

is too crowded for new breweries. Retailers and bar owners select new craft beers based on

quality, and many of the so-called gipsy brewers (brewers which do not own their own

equipment) will struggle to stay in business. It is often brewers without their own equipment

which are not able to consistently deliver high quality.

Lager Price Band Methodology

▪ In lager, there is a wide range when it comes to prices. Supermarkets, the leading distribution

channel for lager, offers lager in all possible price bands. Leading retailers such as Albert

Heijn and Jumbo offer a full range of products, including premium, standard and economy.

Chains offer the major mid-priced brands, as well as a growing variety of premium lagers. In

order to compete with discounters such as Aldi and Lidl, they often also offer a lower-priced

economy brand.

▪ Heineken is the leading mid-priced brand, and has held a strong position for decades. The

brand is considered mid-priced, in contrast to its premium image in other countries. A crate of

24x30cl glass bottles typically costs EUR16.49 at Albert Heijn. In 2017, Swinkels Family

Breweries, one of the major domestic brewers, launched a new premium lager called

Swinckels’. This lager comes in a cardboard crate with 15x33cl glass bottles, which typically

costs EUR12.99 at Albert Heijn.
