Screen Time What are some benefits of screen use?
● Video games have a multiplicity of uses. ● “Digital tools” allow easy access to academics and
can make learning fun. ● Connects kids and adolescents to other cultures
and concepts. ● Can support family connections.
Screen Time & Nature Deficit ● A 2017 report by Common Sense Media said children
ages 2 to 8 spend an average of 2h 19m every day on screen media.
● 72% of that screen time is occupied by TV and video viewing alone.
● That's an increase from 2011, when the average daily screen media time for the same age group was 1h 55m.
Screen Time & Nature Deficit ● Time spent on most devices, including TV, computers,
video games and DVDs, has dropped since 2011, but time spent on mobile phones has increased significantly.
● For ages 8 to 12, average time spent using screen media every day was 4h36m. Tweens spent an average of 4.5 hours per day with screen media and 6 hours with all media, including reading and listening to music.
Screen Time & Nature Deficit
Nature Deficit ● The term Nature Deficit Disorder was introduced by journalist
Richard Louv in his 2005 book titled “Last Child in the Woods”. ● The book explores the causes and implication of children
spending less time outside, especially in unstructured play. ● The book helped to bring attention to the issue, and since then
more school gardens and nature based schools have “cropped” up.
Nature Deficit Research has indicated spending time in nature can (and/or even just seeing green outside a window) :
● Improve fetal growth rate ● Lead to healthier birth weights ● Reduce nearsightedness ● Increase vitamin D levels ● Increase physical activity ● Reduce risk of obesity ● Reduce stress levels
Nature Deficit Research has indicated spending time in nature can:
● Reduce aggression ● Increase likelihood that girls will stay active as they move into
adolescence ● Boost academic performance ● Enhance creativity and critical thinking skills ● Enhance focus and attention span
