BCOM - Carr

Project #2

Carr

The Scenario:

In 2008, during the midst of a huge financial crisis, Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli announced that the company would have to lay off up to 25% of the company’s work force. If you do some research online, you’ll find the terrible press and publicity that the company received regarding how they handled the situation at the time.

For this project, you will imagine that you are a part of the communications team at Chrysler. Your team has been charged with all communications related to the layoffs. Your CEO, Robert Nardelli, has asked you to review, revise and improve his letter (below) that he is planning to send out the employees.

You can find a copy of the letter below. (This is the actual letter that Nardelli sent to employees).

Please do not complete this assignment without reviewing Chapter 11 (Delivering Bad News).1

The Assignment:

Using the “Track Changes” editing feature in Microsoft Word, you must revise and improve the actual letter that Nardelli sent to Chrysler’s employees (following the guidelines in the textbook for delivering bad news). You must show your changes and edits using the “track changes” feature in order to receive credit for this assignment.

Nardelli gave you very specific instructions for the what revisions he wants included to improve the letter:

a. Use the indirect approach for the letter. He wants to open the letter with a more effective buffer and transition into the bad news.

b. Organize the letter and the paragraphs more effectively to be more audience-centered/”you-centered.”

c. Provide more specific information in the letter that will answer some of the potential questions and concerns the employees might have. (you made need to make some details up for this).

d. Improve the tone to seem more positive and hopeful and less formal and distant (at least three changes to improve tone).
