BCN4612 Construction Cost Estimating II
Homework #3
Instructions for Homework #3
By the end of this homework, you should have:
i. Estimated the exterior walls ii. Estimated the interior walls
iii. Estimated the interior wall finishes iv. Estimated the interior floor finishes
v. Estimated the general conditions vi. Estimated the equipment
Assessment
i. You will submit your OnScreen Takeoff database and excel files with calculations of quantities and costs for the required elements.
ii. You will demonstrate proficiency using EXCEL by filling the appropriate tabs with the cost requested above. Copy the takeoff from OST and paste it in the Excel OST tab. You will
demonstrate your knowledge of estimation by estimating the cost of the items from your
takeoff using RSMeans Online.
iii. You will continue working on the project report with your notes, assumptions, and cost sources. You should explain your reasonings and rationale of your work. For example, why
you select a certain RSMeans item, how you take off a certain element, etc. This will help you
keep track of your sources and will help me to figure out the grading of your work as I will be
able to see where and how you got your costs.
PART 1 Estimate exterior walls, interior walls and interior wall/floor/ceiling finishes
1.1 Determine the different types of finishes available by looking at wall sections A5-1 and A5-2, A7, and
A8 files.
1.2 Create linear conditions for the interior/exterior walls you need to estimate. Simplify your estimate by
creating only few linear conditions named as the wall sections, and assume they go to the height of the
suspended ceiling. See Page A4.1.
1.3 Create your takeoff for the exterior and interior walls with finishes in drawings A2.2, and A2.3.
1.4 Create your takeoff for the floor/ceiling finishes using the finish schedule in drawing A9.2.
1.5 Estimate the cost for exterior and interior walls, interior wall/floor/ceiling finishes.
PART 2 Estimate the general conditions
2.1 Assume the construction will take 12 months to complete.
2.2 Use the General Conditions template to estimate the General Conditions for this project. You will have
to use your own criteria to determine what is included and how much.
2.3 A jobsite usually has a Superintendent, a Project Manager, a Project Engineer, and a Contract
Administrator. Larger jobsites might have assistants as well.
2.4 Search RSMeans for cost information.
PART 3 Estimate equipment

3.1 Look at the kitchen drawings for a schedule of equipment.
3.2 Create count conditions for the different types of equipment. You can select only 12 types of equipment.
3.3 Use RSMeans costs to find out equipment cost. You can also use Home Depot, or any other source of cost available.
PART 4 Submit Your Work
Use the link provided on Canvas to submit your:
- OST Takeoff database (.mdb file from your windows/mac computer folders)
- General Estimating template (Estimating Template excel sheet)
- Homework report: 1) This report will briefly describe the steps you did to estimate each of the task and the assumptions
you made in your quantity takeoff and estimation.
2) You should export your takeoff as pdf and append to the end of the report. You can follow this to
export your takeoff: in OST, click File --> Print --> Select Range: Pages with Takeoff --> Print to
PDF.
