BCN4612 Construction Cost Estimating II Homework #2

Instructions for Homework #2

By the end of this homework, you should have:

i. Estimated the foundation walls with reinforcement ii. Estimated the concrete floor slab with reinforcement iii. Estimated the vapor barrier for the slab and foundations iv. Estimated the columns v. Estimated the exterior doors vi. Estimated the exterior windows vii. Estimated the roof

Assessment

i. You will submit your OnScreen Takeoff database and excel files with calculations of quantities and costs for the building’s foundations, slab, vapor barrier, columns and exterior walls.

ii. You will demonstrate proficiency using EXCEL by filling the appropriate tabs with the cost requested above. Copy the takeoff from OST and paste it in the Excel OST tab. You will demonstrate your knowledge of estimation by estimating the cost of the items from your takeoff using RSMeans Online.

iii. You will work on an assumption file where you will write down your notes, assumptions, and cost sources. The assumption file is a document that you explain your reasonings and rationale of your work. For example, why you select a certain RSMeans item, how you take off a certain element, etc. This will help you keep track of your sources and will help me to figure out the grading of your work as I will be able to see where and how you got your costs.

PART 1 Estimate the foundation walls with reinforcement 1.1 Look at drawing S1 and review the notes. 1.2 Create a linear condition to estimate the foundation walls with reinforcement. Include the

reinforcement detail in the conditions notes. 1.3 Follow the length of the foundation wall on the plan layout. 1.4 Look at drawing A5.1 Wall section 1 and note the height of the foundation wall. Enter this height in

your condition for Foundation Wall 1, choose Qty 2 surface area both sides in sqft and Qty 3 volume in cy.

1.5 Repeat the procedure for the other two types of foundation walls. 1.6 Copy your foundation wall takeoff into Excel template and find the cost using RSMeans Online.

PART 2 Estimate concrete floor slab with reinforcement 2.1 Look at drawing S2 and review the legend and schedule. 2.2 Create an area condition to estimate the area of the slab. Use the Grid on the advance tab to estimate

the reinforcing of the slab. Note: You may divide the slab in sections confined by the walls. 2.3 Find the cost of the slab using RSMeans Online.

PART 3 Estimate the vapor barrier for the slab and foundations

3.1 Using the conditions already created for the foundations, foundation walls, and slab, estimate the area of the vapor barrier required.

3.2 Using RSMeans Online estimate the cost of the vapor barrier. PART 4 Estimate the columns 4.1 Look at drawing S1 and identify the location and types of columns. The columns are identified as

TC-#. Where the # is a number that identifies the column type. 4.2 Look at drawing S6 to identify the different columns in the drawing, and their reinforcement. You

may have to create a condition for each type of column AND height. For example, a TC-1 that is 9’- 0” height can be called “TC1-900”. Note: The columns go from the top of the grade beam to the bottom of the tie beams.

PART 5 Estimate the exterior doors 5.1 Look at the plan layout, elevations, and door schedule. 5.2 Create count conditions for the different types of doors. 5.3 Look in RSMeans Online for the cost of the doors that you have identified. 5.4 Enter the quantities and unit costs in your General Estimating Template. 5.5 You may create a new layer for the doors, or for doors and windows together.

PART 6 Estimate the exterior windows 6.1 Look at the plan layout, elevations and window schedule. 6.2 Create count conditions for the different types of windows. 6.3 Look in RSMeans Online for the cost of the windows that you have identified. 6.4 Enter the quantities and unit costs in your General Estimating Template.

PART 7 Estimate the roof 7.1 Estimate the cost of the beams. Note that some beams are raked (inclined), this is very similar to

estimating the cost of the grade beams. 7.2 Estimate the cost of the roof structure (Rafters and Sheathing). Look at roof structures in RSMeans. 7.3 Include tile roofing. 7.4 Using RSMeans Online to estimate the costs of the roof (beams, roof structure, and roof tiles). Write

your assumptions.

PART 8 Submit Your Work Use the link provided on Canvas to submit your:

- OST Takeoff database (.mdb file from your windows/mac computer folders) - General Estimating template (Estimating Template excel sheet) - Homework report: 1) This report will briefly describe the steps you did to estimate each of the task and the

assumptions you made in your quantity takeoff and estimation. 2) You should export your takeoff as pdf and append to the end of the report. You can follow this

to export your takeoff: in OST, click File --> Print --> Select Range: Pages with Takeoff --> Print to PDF
