CHAPTER 12: PRESENTATION UNIT INSTRUCTIONS 6

Chapter 12: Presentation Unit Instructions—Updated Fall, 2019

Dr. Sandra Bevill

Business Communication

Parts of the Presentation Unit:

First: Choose/Record your topic (submit for grade)

Second: Research Topic, write your speech/presentation; this will be around 2 ½ - 3 pages, double spaced. Your actual oral presentation is strictly time-limited, so the written speech won’t be long.

Third: Submit your written speech (for your oral presentation) with all required parts (submit for grade); this will be over the topic you chose

Fourth: Practice, practice, practice your oral presentation—get your PowerPoint ready

Fifth: Record your Tegrity Oral Presentation (upload for grade) ---must be a video recording of you as you give your presentation and must include PowerPoint to go along with it that meets the criteria below.

Sixth: Submit the PowerPoint you use in the oral presentation (for a grade) by the deadline for the oral presentation.

Chapter 12: Presentation Unit Instructions

Read and follow these instructions and the instructions in the Tegrity lectures pertaining to our Presentation Unit. Read Chapter 12. If you have any questions, please ask me! This unit has several parts explained below.

I. Choose/Record your topic on Google spreadsheet: (10 points)

a. Topics must come from the list of topics provided by Dr. Bevill

b. Before you select your topic, do a quick library search to ensure you can locate articles on your topic. See the Tegrity lecture “How to locate an article via ASU online library.”

c. Only two students per class (or group) may choose the same topic—it is your responsibility to ensure the topic you chose has not already been selected by two students. If your class has groups, two students per group may choose each topic.

d. Topics must be recorded on GoogleDocs via link emailed by Dr. Bevill. If you don’t get the email, notify me asap.

e. All topics must be researched for business purposes. For example, cyber safety refers to cyber safety for businesses not for students or others; be sure the articles you read and cite are related to business and not students or young people.

f. Stay on topic. If your topic is Professional Attire for Women, your entire presentation should be about professional attire for women.

g. Use the Major Points I have under each topic unless you clear it with me first.

II. Your written speech

Here are the parts your written speech must have:

You must follow the directions here and in all of the Chapter 12 Tegrity lectures.

a. Each Major Point must have at least 3 types of support/evidence or information about your topic that come from at least 2 different sources.

b. Each of these 3 types of support/information must be cited ….otherwise it’s plagiarism. Use APA for your in-text (internal) citations.

i. Highlight each of these in-text citations in blue for Major Point 1

ii. Highlight each of these in-text citations in yellow for Major Point 2.

iii. These 3 types of support, cited correctly, are the bulk of your paper. If you don’t have the 3 types of support with in-text citation in each Major Point, you cannot make a decent grade on this.

iv. The information you get from your sources MUST be cited as explained about. These in-text citations should not be more than 2- 4 lines long unless it is a long quotation, and you can only have one of those in your entire paper!

v. Do NOT use direct quotes for all of your citations. Most of your citations should be relatively brief and paraphrased.

c. You must use at least a total of at least 4 different sources (articles) in your written paper assignment.

d. You must have a full References section of all the sources you used at the end of your paper—and each must include a working link for each source used. Only the sources you used/cited in your paper may be on the References page.

e. The in-text citations and References page must be in APA format.

f. My Tegrity lecture on the Basics of APA will explain how to cite your sources and do your references; additional information is available at the Purdue Owl. Currently, the link is https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

g. I cannot stress enough how important it is to follow the directions in my Tegrity lectures.

h. Before you submit your written paper Assignment, you should “grade” yours by the rubric I will be using.

i. If you find a source older than 6 years that you would like to use, you must email me a link to the source, tell me why it’s a good source, and get my permission first . Don’t wait till the day the assignment is due to email me.

j. Remember: If you don’t have the 3 types of support with in-text citation in each Major Point, you cannot make a decent grade on this.

k. Your written paper will have a cover page, running head, and the following sections (with the titles in bold)

i. Attention Getter

ii. Introduction

iii. Major Point 1 (and your Major Point written out in the title

iv. Major Point 2 (and your Major Point written out in the title)

v. Summary

vi. References

l. Your sources: The articles you use for your sources must be complete articles, with an author, no older than 6 years old (unless you clear it with me first, at least 800 words in length, and at least 2 of them must come from the ASU online library; and the others must come from reputable sources. No textbooks, dictionaries, books, e-books, blogs, Wikipedia, etc. may be used at all.

III. Your Oral Presentation over your topic

a. Watch the Tegrity lectures “Giving Your Oral Presentation, Parts 1 & 2.” These will walk you through how to do your oral presentation and demonstrate one for you.

b. You will use the written speech you submitted for your oral presentation. Don’t read your presentation , though.

c. Dress appropriately: Face-to-face classes: You will not be allowed to give your oral presentation if you are wearing jeans, ball cap, t-shirt, shorts, revealing clothing, or anything not clearly the business attired required. Online classes: Yours won’t count if you are dressed in the items above. (If there is any question about the appropriateness, you will be required to prove, with refereed sources from the ASU online library, that what you have on is accepted, appropriate business attire, so be sure you err on the side of conservative attire.

i. Dress:  at least business appropriate casual:  If you wear anything but a nice shirt and tie, dress shoes with socks, and dress slacks (men) or dress slacks, button-up blouse, and jacket (women) with close-toe pumps, you may want to check with me to ensure it’s appropriate.

ii. This is a partial list of what not to wear: No hats, jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, leggings, shorts, sweat or yoga pants, sports paraphernalia, any clothing that shows an undergarment, any low-cut top, flip flops, very high heels, cold-shoulder tops, anything that shows your back, cleavage, or tummy,

iii. If you do not have appropriate business attire and are near Jonesboro, the College of Business has a Clothes Closet from which you may borrow clothing for the oral presentation. You will have to make arrangements with Dr. Leslie as to when you can look at the clothes.

d. Strict time limits: Your oral presentation will be strictly timed. Your presentation should be between 3-4 minutes. If you go one second over 5 minutes, you will lose a letter grade.

e. Avoid use of “uh,” “um,” “you know,” “like,” “and stuff like that,” and other filler words.

f. Slow down. Nervous students tend to speak very quickly. Practice so often that you sound natural.

g. Speak up. If you have a naturally soft voice, practice so often that you learn to project your voice so that it’s easy to hear.

h. You must have your PowerPoint in slide show to go along with your Oral Presentation.

i. Your PowerPoint must have appropriate graphics

ii. Your PowerPoint must follow the 6 x 6 rule

i. You must make eye contact with the camera (online students) or audience (face-to-face classes).

j. Be enthusiastic!! This topic is something you chose, so make sure you sound enthusiastic during your presentation.

k. Smile appropriately! You certainly don’t want to laugh through your presentation, but you want to look friendly.

l. Do not close your laptop after you make your oral presentation until it has successfully uploaded.

m. After uploading your Tegrity Oral Presentation, go back the next day to ensure your presentation uploaded correctly.

IV. So: Be dressed appropriately, be live, and be prepared!
