Basic Essay Rules: For all writing assignments.
1) Do not use “The” to begin a sentence.
2) No two paragraphs begin with the same word.
3) No two sentences begin with the same word in the same paragraph.
4) Do not use “thing,” “like,” “very,” “great,” or “a lot” in a paper other than in a quotation.
5) When citing evidence in a response paper, try to limit quotations to five words or fewer. Use only exactly what is important or vital to get your point across and combine it in a sentence with commentary about why it is important.
6) Never End A Sentence With A Preposition (NEASWAP)

7) Do not use contractions or other shortened word forms or symbols. No slang.

9) Do not refer to the writing process in your essays (“In conclusion…” or “As mentioned earlier…”).
10) Vary your sentence structure.
11) Do not repeat your own key words/phrases. Do not repeat key words or phrases from your prompt.
12) Maintain the basic structure of one sentence of Concrete Detail followed by two sentences of commentary. (Reverse the ratio for science and social studies or research papers.)
13) Do not use any form of first person (I, me, my, mine, we, our us) or any form of second person (you, your).
