Basic Essay Grading Rubric (Engl 1301 & 1302)
Writing process 10 pts Student can demonstrate evidence of the writing process through pre-writing activities, drafts, team editing or researching activity, conferencing/presenting (being able to articulate research & writing plan verbally), proofreading, etc.
Introduction 5 pts Student demonstrates knowledge of opening strategies: gives relevant/necessary background information, defines terms, engages reader with an anecdotal opening, narrows the focus, etc.
Content 35 pts
Student writes a clear and meaningful argument/interpretation and develops that argument adequately. Appropriate supporting examples are well developed. Essay reflects attention paid to word choice, sentence structure, transitional expressions, coherence, unity, critical thinking, organization, and flow. If a source is referenced, it is interpreted, synthesized, and documented ethically. Plagiarism – and the consequences of plagiarism --has been avoided. Thesis statement and topic sentence create a well-organized essay.
Mechanics 20 pts
Student demonstrates a command of the standards of edited American English with no major grammatical errors.
Conclusion 10 pts
Student has drawn a conclusion about what was argued, not merely summarized the essay. The conclusion demonstrates the culmination of critical thinking and is appropriate to purpose. The conclusion shows some original thinking.
MLA format 15 pts
Student has employed the MLA format and documentation style in formatting the paper, using in-text citations and producing a works cited page, if needed. Correct heading, font size, and spacing is attended to.
Personal Responsibility 5 pts
Student demonstrates personal responsibility by submitting the paper on time and in the way instructed by the professor (hard copy, electronic, etc). Student responded appropriately to comments on drafts and earlier graded assignments and took corrective actions.
