1. 25 QUESTIONS for EACH VERSE. Information for writing this section is found in the Tom Long book, chapter 3 Biblical Exegesis for Preaching under “III Attending to the Text”, “F.” pages 81-84, stopping at “1.” In the 3rd edition, this can be found on page 92, “F. LISTEN ATTENTIVELY TO THE TEXT.”

You are required to write 25 questions for verse 6, 25 questions for verse 7, 25 questions for verse 8, etc. You must have 25 questions for each verse, or this section for Part I of the paper receives a ZERO score. Questions MUST be numbered see example for format.

2. KEY DIFFERENCES (2 FULL PAGES MINIMUM) Does NOT include questions. This information is found in the Tom Long book, chapter 3, page 75, under “Establishing a reliable translation of the text” letter “C.” Stop at “II Getting Introduced to the Text.” In the 3rd edition, this can be found on page 85, “C. ESTABLISH A RELIABLE TRANSLATION OF THE TEXT.”

· Find KEY DIFFERENCES compare version “A” (MAIN) translation to “B” and compare version “A” (MAIN) translation to version “C”.

· Use MERRIAM WEBSTER dictionary to define KEY WORDS (see example). Just because you think you know what a WORD MEANS, trust me, in the context of the passage, it will be very different. All papers MUST USE MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY ONLY. Other dictionaries will NOT be accepted and points will be deducted.

· More than 2 or 3 KEY DIFFEERNCES per page might be too much. You want to find KEY DIFFERENCES, KEY DIFFERNCES of which, if they were removed from the text, the text loses meaning.

· The KEY DIFFERENCE section is the ONLY TIME YOU WILL USE VERSION “B” AND “C”. Use version “A” TRANSLATION for all other sections in the paper including the question section .

3. TEXT’S CENTER OF GRAVITY: (1 FULL PAGE MINIMUM) Does NOT include questions. You must have ONLY ONE center of gravity. More than one center of gravity will result in the deduction of points. Bold and underline the text center of gravity sentence . Information for this section is found in the Tom Long book, chapter 3, on page 85, and under “4.” Stop at “5.” In the 3rd edition, this can be found on page 97, “4. ASK IF THE TEXT HAS A CENTER OF GRAVITY”.

4. Paper must be 3 pages minimum and no more than 4 pages maximum (does not include TITLE PAGE, WORKS CITED page or questions). This 4th page can be used either for the KEY DIFFEERNCE section, the TEXT’S CENTER OF GRAVITY section or used in a combination in both sections.

5. Use FIRST PERSON. I want to hear from you in the paper. The only other “person” I want to hear from is MERRIAM-WEBSTER in the QUESTION section. Do not use outside sources. DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES!

6. STAY WITHIN THE SIX VERSES. DO NOT USE MATERIAL OUTSIDE THE SIX VERSES. DO NOT USE MATERIAL OUTSIDE OF THE SIX VERSES. This component, using material/information outside the six verses will be addressed in Part II of the exegetical paper. DO NOT INTRODUCE WORDS, PHRASES, IDEAS, NAMES, LAWS, DO NOT ADD TO WORDS, ETC OUTSIDE THE SIX VERSES. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED DOING SO.

7. Do not use long and/or excessive quotes from the text. I want to hear from you. Lengthy quotes to fill page space will result in points deducted in the KEY DIFFERENCE and TEXT’S CENTER OF GRAVITY sections. POINTS WILL BE LOST!

8. Please use descriptive words to originally, colorfully, creatively and eloquently illustrate your point of view in each section.

9. You MUST format the paper using double spacing, 12 Point Font, Times New Roman, 1-inch MSWORD margins. SET MARGINS CORRECTLY!

10. Paginate (insert page numbers at bottom right corner, but not on the TITLE PAGE and WORKS CITED page)

11. Paper MUST have a TITLE/COVER PAGE

12. Do not, do not, DO NOT USE THE WORD “ THAT ” UNLESS IT IS IN A QUOTE. Using the word “that” and contractions is the fastest way a paper will go from an A/B to a D or F. Using the word “that” makes a paper passive and I do not want passive papers. I want ACTIVE PAPERS. Do not use the word “THAT” unless it is found in a quote.

13. Do not use: contractions (I’m, isn’t, we’re, etc.)

14. Do NOT use: “we” “us” “our” “you” and other personal pronouns leading to a paper becoming a sermon (see below) or sounding preachy. This should help keep “YOU” from PREACHING in the paper.

15. Do not use an introductory sentence(s) in ANY section . Points will be deducted if an introductory sentence is used.

16. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE THE TEXT. STAY WITHIN THE TEXT.

17. DO NOT USE INFORMATION FOUND OUTSIDE OF THE TEXT.

18. STICK TO THE SIX VERSES AND ONLY WRITE ABOUT THOSE SIX VERSES.

19. Please use headings for each section.

Please do not write about something I have heard 1,000 times before or what you have heard in church 1,000 times before. Look deeply and openly into the text and ONLY WRITE ON WHAT THE TEXT PROVIDES.
